Rusa Deer

Wild Boar & Rusa Deer Hunting in Mauritius

This three-day hunting adventure in paradise is an exciting opportunity to experience the best of hunting in Mauritius, with deer hunting using various hunting methods across different terrains. Challenge yourself: Three Rusa deer in three days, with three wild boar included for a fast-paced adventure! Are you ready?

The Rusa Deer

Introduced to the island in the mid-1600s, Rusa deer hunting in Mauritius is now undertaken to control invasive species, with a population of about 60,000 animals now inhabiting the region.

Their chosen habitats of dense forests and sugar cane plantations aid them in camouflaging themselves from hunters and provide the perfect habitats for these deer to thrive.

Rusa deer hunting is a challenging pursuit and will challenge hunters during the safari. Known for their excellent sense of smell, detecting smells up to half a mile away, together with their good eyesight, these intelligent mammals are known for their avoidance tactics, such as freezing or slowly retreating into the wilderness, utilized when danger is perceived.

Rusa deer hunting in Mauritius can be undertaken annually between 01 June to 30 September with driven hunts and using the walk and stalk method, from 15 May to 15 December. Hunting methods for deer hunting in Mauritius include driven hunts, walk-and-stalk, spot-and-stalk, as well as hunting from a blind. Whichever option you choose, be prepared for an unforgettable safari.

The Wild Boar

Expect a thrilling adventure with boar hunting in Mauritius, where unpredictability is the name of the game with these hogs! These hogs are targeted through various hunting methods including blinds, walk-and-stalk, as well as driven hunts and can be hunted throughout the year.

With good eyesight and hearing, the wild boar is very wary and alert of any noises or unfamiliar sights and will take off without hesitation, reaching speeds of up to 25 miles per hour to flee from any perceived threats or danger. It can also jump a height of 5 foot with ease, making cornering them tricky. Add to this their preferred habitat of dense forests and sugar cane fields, and you can see why visibility can be a challenge.

Wild boars can be hunted throughout the year in Mauritius.

Traveling to Mauritius

Mauritius can be reached from Europe, Asia, or Africa, with the most direct route from Africa being from Johannesburg, South Africa. Flying time from Johannesburg to the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport, in Plaine Magnien, Mauritius, ranges from 3h55 to 4h15.

A representative from the outfitter will meet you upon arrival and arrange a transfer from the airport to the hotel. The road transfer from the airport to Le Morne Beach is 34 miles and takes around 1 h 15m.

Mauritius Hunting Seasons

Mauritius has different hunting seasons depending on the species being targeted, with wild boar being available to hunt throughout the year, while Rusa deer are hunted between 01 June and 30 September through driven hunts and from 15 May to 15 December using the walk-and-stalk method.

 Firearms

This package includes the rental of firearms during your deer and wild boar hunting safari.

Rifle Calibers for the Hunting Safari

Hunting the Rusa deer can be a challenging affair, with these deer being highly intelligent and known to deploy avoidance tactics when being targeted. Accurate shot placement is required to successfully harvest this animal. Aim for shoulder or heart/lung shots for an ethical and quick kill. Your outfitter will have numerous rifles available, including .243, .270, .30-06, or 25-06 caliber options.

When wild boar hunting in Mauritius, aim for a shoulder shot that will travel straight through the hog and destroy the heart, lungs, and shoulders. Alternatively, aim for the heart and lungs for a quick, clean kill. Once again, the outfitter will have various rifles available; consider using a .243, .270, .30-06, or 25-06 caliber. Be prepared for an unpredictable, fast-paced safari… These hogs are lightning-quick and disappear as fast as they appeared in the first place!

Bow hunting in Mauritius is legal, and both these species can be harvested using a bow. However, strict regulations apply, and coordination with the outfitter is required, or chat to Jean-Francois about the availability of bows.
