Wild Boar & Rusa Deer Hunting in Mauritius

Not many hunters can claim to have hunted on an extinct volcanic island, and then still experienced the best variety of hunting species available on the island, including wild boar and the Rusa deer.

The Rusa Deer

This deer has thrived since its introduction to the island by the Dutch in the mid-1600s. Currently, their numbers have grown to around 60,000 deer on the island, enjoying the diverse habitats in which they flourish.

Their chosen habitats of dense forests and sugar cane plantations aid them in camouflaging themselves from hunters and provide the perfect habitats for these deer to thrive.

Don’t underestimate the challenge of Rusa deer hunting. These deer are known for their exceptional sense of smell and good eyesight, together with avoidance tactics that they employ when they sense danger or threats. These deer can be undertaken annually between 01 June to 30 September with driven hunts and using the walk and stalk method, from 15 May to 15 December, while hunting methods include driven hunts, walk-and-stalk, spot-and-stalk, as well as hunting from a blind.

The Wild Boar

Expect the unexpected when boar hunting in Mauritius with these hogs ticking the boxes for a fast-paced, action-packed hunting safari. Wild boars prefer a habitat of dense forest and sugar cane fields and are targeted through various hunting methods, including blinds, walk-and-stalk, as well as driven hunts.

Reaching speeds of up to 25 miles per hour, the wild boar is very wary and alert. If it picks up any noises or unfamiliar sights, it will take off without hesitation, fleeing from perceived danger. It can also jump a height of 5 feet with ease, making cornering them tricky.

Wild boars can be hunted throughout the year in Mauritius.

Traveling to Mauritius

Situated in the Indian Ocean 1,240 miles from Madagascar, Mauritius can be reached with international flights from Europe, Asia, or Africa.  Flights land at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport, in Plaine Magnien, about 30 miles from the country’s capital, Port Louis.

For those wanting to combine an African safari with a tropical island hunting adventure, the most direct route from Africa to Mauritius after the safari is from Johannesburg, South Africa, with a flying time of around 3h55 to 4h15, depending on the carrier.

A representative from the outfitter will meet you upon arrival and arrange a transfer from the airport to the hotel. The road transfer from the airport to Le Morne Beach is 34 miles and takes around 1 h 15.

Mauritius Hunting Seasons

Mauritius has different hunting seasons depending on the species being targeted. While wild boar is available to hunt throughout the year, the Rusa deer can be hunted between 01 June and 30 September through driven hunts and from 15 May to 15 December using the walk-and-stalk method.

Firearms when Hunting in Mauritius

It is a challenge to bring your firearm into the country for a hunting safari, but your Mauritian outfitter has guns available to use on the safari, and they are included in the package price.

Bow hunting in Mauritius is legal, and your outfitter does have bows available. Alternatively, you can bring your bow, but there are strict regulations that need to be adhered to. Chat with Jean-Francois for further information relating to bow hunting in Mauritius.

Rifle Calibers for the Hunting Safari

Rusa deer hunting in Mauritius can be challenging, with suggested rifle options including .243, .270, .30-06, or 25-06 caliber options. Shot placement options include the popular heart/lung shot for a successful safari with a quick kill.

When wild boar hunting, be prepared for an action-packed, unpredictable, and fast-paced safari. In terms of shot placement, aim for a shoulder shot that will travel straight through the hog and destroy the heart, lungs, and shoulders. Alternatively, aim for the heart and lungs for a quick, clean kill. Rifle options include a .243, .270, .30-06, or 25-06 caliber.

Bow hunting in Mauritius is legal, and both these species can be harvested using a bow. However, strict regulations apply, and coordination with the outfitter is required.
