Wild Boar & Rusa Deer Hunting in Mauritius

Your one-day hunting safari will see you target both the Rusa deer and the wild boar. Each species has its challenges to overcome during the safari, making this hunt an exciting and fast-paced adventure.

The Rusa Deer

Rusa deer hunting in Mauritius is undertaken to control invasive species. These antelopes were introduced to the area in the mid-1600s and thrived. Currently, it is estimated that there are more than 60,000 deer scattered across the island. Their preferred habitat includes dense forests and sugar cane plantations, with these habitats provide the perfect cover to be able to adequately camouflage themselves from hunters.

The Rusa deer can be extremely testing to hunt, as they are renowned for their excellent sense of smell and can detect smells up to half a mile away. They can pinpoint sounds quite easily and are known for their good eyesight which picks up movement in the area. They are extremely intelligent and apply avoidance tactics, such as freezing or slowly retreating, to avoid being captured.

Hunting methods include driven hunts, walk-and-stalk, spot-and-stalk, as well as hunting from a blind.

The Wild Boar

Wild boar hunting can be thrilling, fast, and exceptionally exciting…it all depends on the situation. These hogs are targeted through various hunting methods, including blinds, walk-and-stalk, as well as driven hunts.

With good eyesight and hearing, the wild boar is very wary and alert of any noises or unfamiliar sights and will take off without hesitation, reaching speeds of up to 25 miles per hour to flee. It can also jump a height of 5 feet with ease, making cornering them tricky. Add to this their preferred habitat of dense forests and sugar cane fields, and you can see why visibility can be a challenge.

Wild boars can be hunted throughout the year in Mauritius.
