Hunting the African Cape Buffalo in the Waterberg District of South Africa is an experience that combines the allure of dangerous game hunting with the unique challenges posed by this formidable animal.
Renowned for their strength and unpredictability, Cape Buffalo are one of Africa’s “Big Five,”. The Limpopo offers diverse landscapes and abundant wildlife, ensuring an unforgettable African hunting safari.
One of the challenges on an African Cape Buffalo hunt is the need for precise shot placement. Buffalo are known for their thick skin and powerful build, making a well-placed shot critical for a successful hunt. Misjudging your aim will lead to a wounded Cape Buffalo, creating a potentially life threatening scenario. This is a dangerous game hunt in dense vegetation, “up close and personal”. It takes one bullet to kill a Cape Buffalo, another pile of lead to convince the Buffalo as to that fact.
For first time Cape Buffalo hunters, Andrew will guide you through the intricacies of stalking, tracking and ensuring that you harvest your trophy Buffalo. Be warned, Cape Buffalo Hunting is additive !!!
Whether you are a seasoned hunter or a newcomer, this hunt is an opportunity to connect with nature, test your skills, and take home trophies that embody the spirit of the African wilderness.
Besides Cape Buffalo, the ranch has a variety of additional animals available for hunting while on safari. Some of the iconic African favorites are (but not limited to), Spiral Horns: Kudu Bull (US$ 3500), Bushbuck Ram (US$ 1650, Cape Eland Bull (US$ 3500), Nyala Bull (US$ 2500). Medium sized antelope are also on many hunters lists while on safari in S.A. including: Impala Ram (US$ US$ 400), Blue Wildebeest (US$ 1200) an done of the all time favorites, Warthogs at US$ 400).
This trophy Cape Buffalo hunt will be done on foot, following the traditional principles of fair chase. This is truly a dangerous game hunting safari, and these big ” Dugga Boys” with thick and heavy bosses will be found in “the thick stuff”. Andrew and the team of trackers will work hard to find your dream buffalo. Some Buffalo Bulls may have deep drops and curls, others a wide spread. One thing guaranteed is, they will are all mean as can be. Buffalo are called ” Africa’s Black Death” for good reason.
Cape Buffalo are cunning and wise. Buffalo are known to avoid and outsmart hunters. A charging Buffalo is going to come at you like a freight train, at more than thirty five miles an hour, destroying everything in its path. A Buffalo Bull shows no emotion or behavior change before a charge. Only a well placed bullet in the brain will stop him. Bring enough gun!!
Poorly hit, Cape Buffalo are incredibly difficult to stop. Social media platforms are forever posting Cape Buffalo charges, and many outfitters who were not on their game on the day, have moved on to meet their makers !!
Buffalo shot placement is all about anchoring the animal. Head shots are to be avoided, unless the Buffalo is in full charge. The preferred shot would be a third of the way up the shoulder, into the vitals, immediately followed up by a few more well-placed bullets ensuring that the Buffalo is anchored and in fact down. Approach a ” dead Buffalo” with extreme caution.
South Africa is not regulated with regards to a specific hunting season and Buffalo hunts can take place all year round. The cooler months, which run from April to October are preferred. In summer, the temperatures are just to high which can make Buffalo hunting even more of a challenge. Tamlyn hunted a Cape Buffalo in the Limpopo Province, South Africa in late November 2023. While the Buffalo measure over 42 inches, Tamlyn started off with a poor shot, low in the brisket. 8 hours of walking in the heat is not pleasant and can lead to dehydration and poor judgement. You need to be on top of your game on a Buffalo hunt.
The months of November through to February are also the rainy season. Rain showers and bad weather can continue for days, literally placing a “damper” on the hunting safari.
On a buffalo hunt, we at Game Hunting Safaris are firm believers that there can never be too much gun. As much as shot placement is always a critical factor, the hunter needs a rifle with enough stopping power in case things go a little “pear-shaped”.
A .375 loaded with good quality 300 grain bullets is the minimum legal requirement when dangerous game hunting in South Africa. But bigger caliber rifles such as a .458, .458 Lott, .404, .416 will kill a Big Buffalo “just fine”. Any quality double rifle, that you can shoot well, from a .470 l and bigger will certainly get the job done at close quarters.
When making your choice of what rifle to bring, as a rule of thumb bring the biggest caliber that you can accurately shoot and handle with confidence.
