No airlines fly directly from the United States of America to Uganda. There is at least one stop involved on the journey, with popular airlines flying into the country, including Emirates, Qatar Airlines, Turkish Airlines, and Ethiopian Airlines.
Entebbe International Airport is the hub for both domestic and international flights. The airport is situated in Entebbe, about 20 miles from the country’s capital city, Kampala.
Once in Uganda, a charter flight is recommended to get to the Karamoja concession, simply due to the length of driving time.
These chartered flights are not included in the safari package; prices are roughly as follows:
The Karamoja North hunting grounds stretch over 450,000 hectares and include six districts. The area is rich in Buffalo, Jackson’s Hartbeest, Sudan Oribi, Eastern Bohor Reedbuck, Chandler’s Mountain Reedbuck, Gunther’s Dik-Dik, East African Defassa Waterbuck, Warthog, and the Maneless Sudan Zebra. Kudu are also frequently spotted.
Karamoja South is a hidden gem for adventurous hunters and is also home to the rare Sudan roan antelope and a unique Sudan oribi species, along with some breathtaking views of Uganda’s unspoilt wilderness.
Situated in central Uganda, the Kafu Basin hunting concession is found along the Kafu, Mayanja, and Lake Kyoga river systems. The area is renowned for its rich, dense vegetation, offering birds and wildlife the perfect habitat in which to live and thrive. Habitats in the region include wetlands, wooded savannas, and river forests, as well as large papyrus swamps.
The region is a premier hunting ground for the East African Sitatunga, with exceptional trophies available for hunting in the area. Other sought-after species targeted here include the Eastern Bohor Reedbuck, Nile Bushbuck, Ugandan Defassa Waterbuck, Leopard, East African Bush Duiker, Oribi, as well as various bird species. The Uganda Kob and the Warthog are also occasionally hunted here.
The Aswa-Lolim concession comprises 45,000 hectares, sharing a 68-mile-long border with Murchison Falls National Park to the south and approximately 48 miles along the Nile River to the west. The concession is characterized by rolling grassy hills adorned with palm trees, together with small valleys, creeks, and light forests. Closer to the Nile River, dense forests and expansive papyrus swamps are found.
Hunts in Aswa-Lolim are available from January to the end of April/May, while Sitatunga hunting is available throughout the year.
The Karamoja hunting concession remains one of Uganda’s last true wilderness regions where hunters can experience the thrill of a hunt in the stark, remote African wilderness. The concession borders South Sudan and Kenya and is renowned for its rugged vegetation and remote location.
This region is home to some spectacular species, such as large herds of Nile Buffalo, Eastern Bohor Reedbuck, Gunther’s Dik-Dik, Chandler’s Mountain Reedbuck, Oribi, Jackson’s Hartebeest, as well as the rare Greater and Lesser Kudus, also known as Africa’s Gray Ghosts.
Lodging while hunting in Uganda will include colonial-style East African safari tents or traditional grass thatched tented bungalows, depending on the concession. The semi-permanent camps and lodges are equipped with a 24/7 power supply as well as satellite internet.
Enjoy three scrumptious meals as well as further snacks daily, some of which may include local game meat (venison). Meals incorporate local ingredients, with hearty, tasty cuisine the order of the day. The field cooks prepare different styles of cuisine on safari, including Indian, African, German, Italian, and Chinese options.
There are various accommodations available; the timing of your trip will depend on which lodge is used, and more details regarding specific amenities will follow accordingly.
Shot Placement on a hunting safari remains of paramount importance. Accurate shot placement secures a quick and ethical hunt, while poor shot placement can lead to hours or even days spent tracking a wounded animal through challenging terrain.
