Hannes and his team have been conducting plains game and dangerous game hunts in Limpopo since 2006, operating in the Kransberge region of the Waterberg Mountains near Thabazimbi.
The team focuses on creating personalized hunting safaris suited to each client, whether they are new to African hunting or experienced hunters returning for another safari. The lodge is also family-friendly, making it possible for non-hunting companions to enjoy the Limpopo experience.
Hunters will arrive at Oliver Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, where Hannes or a member of his team will meet them.
The journey from Johannesburg to the hunting lodge takes approximately three hours by road, traveling through the rolling hills and valleys of the Limpopo landscape.
Depending on international flight schedules, an overnight stay in Johannesburg may be required before the road transfer.
This combination hunt follows the traditional African walk-and-stalk method, with an emphasis on fair chase. The varied Waterberg terrain provides opportunities to glass from elevated positions before beginning a carefully planned stalk.
A safari vehicle may also be used to cover more ground across the extensive hunting area. Hunters may also use strategic ambush positions along frequently traveled game trails and other suitable vantage points.
The mountainous and hilly terrain can make these hunts physically demanding, while patience, careful observation and good fieldcraft are important when pursuing both Sable and Roan.
For hunters researching sable hunts, understanding the terrain and being prepared for a patient stalk are important parts of the experience. The same applies to roan hunts, where careful trophy assessment and a well-planned approach are essential.
The Waterberg region provides a distinctive setting for plains game hunts, with rugged mountains, rolling hills and open grassland creating a varied hunting environment.
Limpopo is one of South Africa’s most established hunting provinces, with a wide range of plains game, specialty species and dangerous game available. The Waterberg landscape also provides excellent opportunities for hunters who enjoy glassing from elevated ground before moving in for a stalk.
Plains game hunting takes place throughout the year in South Africa, although the cooler months from April through October are generally preferred.
During the drier months, grass is shorter and vegetation is less dense, allowing hunters to spot game more easily. The wet season generally occurs from December through February, when rain and periods of harsh weather can continue for several days.
The cooler, drier conditions can make walking and stalking more comfortable, particularly when hunting in the mountainous terrain of the Waterberg.
Hunters bringing their own firearms into South Africa will need to arrange the appropriate temporary firearm import permit.
A SAPS 520 form must be completed together with the required supporting documentation, including passport copies, airline tickets, a letter of invitation from Hannes and proof of firearm ownership. The temporary import permit allows hunters to bring a maximum of four rifles, with no more than two of the same caliber, and a maximum of 200 rounds of ammunition per caliber.
Rifle rental is also available at US$40 per day, with ammunition charged at cost.
A Sable and Roan combination hunt offers the opportunity to pursue two exceptional African antelope during one focused safari. Add the Waterberg mountain setting, experienced hunting team, extensive private ranch and comfortable lodge, and this becomes a memorable Limpopo hunting experience.
