Hunt over 40 000 acres in the Pongola Reserve, Natal Province
A trophy Warthog Boar will have an average height at the shoulder of approximately 25 inches, weigh over 180 pounds, with a tusk length of more than 10 inches. SCI score for a trophy warthog is 29, measured by adding the length of each tusk and the circumference, on using the measurements of the upper tusks.
Although Warthog hunting is widely spread throughout South Africa, the Pongola hunting concession, situated on the banks of the Jozini dam has plenty of hogs. The hunting area is more than 40 000 acres, featuring a wide variety of game including Hippos, Crocodile, Cape Buffalo and Elephant that migrate into the area. The purpose of hunting Warthogs, besides having and exceptional hunting safari is for the trophy, as well as to harvest the delicious meat. A big Boar can weigh in excess of 250 pounds.
Big boars, will not turn and flee, but will turn and fight with bottom tusks that can do serious damage. After a hard day Warthog hunting and enjoying a few cold beverages, ask Peter to tell you how a Warthog broke his arm, it is an exceptionally funny story!!!
In South Africa, Warthog hunting is available year-round, with the hunting season running from January to December. South African outfitters have P3 Exemption permits, which means they are not restricted to a specific Warthog hunting season.
The dry season, from May to October, is generally regarded as the best time to hunt Warthog. In contrast, January and February can bring prolonged rainfall, and when it isn’t raining, temperatures can soar above 104°F.
During the dry months, the thinning vegetation improves visibility, and with water sources becoming scarce, Warthogs are more likely to gather at waterholes, increasing hunting opportunities. The cooler temperatures also make for a more comfortable experience in the field.
Besides hunting Warthog, the reserve has a variety of plains game animals that can be added to the safari for an additional trophy fee. A few of the favorites include:
Nyala Bulls on the concession are exceptional, with these antelope being native to the Natal region, for a cost of US$ 2500. Our daughter shot an exceptional Nyala on our hunt with Peter, measuring 28,5 inches from the bases to the tip.
With the hunting concession being situated on the banks of the Jozini Dam, having a length of more than 100 miles and covering more than 30 000 acres of surface area, the dam is packed with Tiger Fish.
Day charters can be arranged at a cost of US$ 150 per person, including equipment and consumables.
International hunters will land at Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport and from there take a domestic flight to King Shaka International Airport in the KwaZulu Province.
Certain international airlines may fly directly to King Shaka Airport. Airlink is recommended for this flight route from Oliver Tambo to King Shaka as the airline is not only affordable (US$ 150 to US$ 200 return), but also professional, on time and equipped to safely transport firearms, plus they serve “adult beverages”.
Africa Sky Boutique Hotel is recommended for hunters spending a night in Johannesburg. Management of the hotel assists with road transfers to/from OR Tambo International. They can also deal with all rifle import permits and obtain per-clearance approvals, thus avoiding delays. For further information, see "Affiliate Services" below. On arrival in King Shaka International Airport, Peter and his team will meet hunters for “meet and greet” and assist with any rifle permits. The transfer to the hunting lodge will take approximately 2 and ½ hours, covering a distance of 190 miles.
Accommodations are beautifully constructed wooden cabins with exceptional views of the hunting concession and Jozini Dam. Rooms are comfortably furnished with air-conditioning and en-suite bathrooms.
A central “Boma” provides the perfect back drop to enjoy evening fires, meals and cold beverages overlooking the African savanna.
To import a firearm into South Africa for the purpose of Warthog hunting, you will need to complete a SAPS 520 form.
International hunters bringing their own rifles will need to provide copy passports, copy airline tickets, letter of invitation from Gerhard and proof of ownership (Customs declaration form 4457 for US citizens).
South African is renowned for its exceptional African game hunting options, and this Warthog hunting safari will not disappoint. Due to high demand, space is limited.
