Experience the Thrill Of Sable Hunting in Mozambique

Mozambique remains an exciting game hunting destination, offering an array of species for game hunting safaris, including the majestic sable antelope (Hippotragus Niger). There are four subspecies of sable, with the southern sable (Hippotragus niger niger), also known as the common sable, being available for hunting in Mozambique. Prime sable hunting in Mozambique includes the Niassa region, as well as the Zambezi Delta which boasts large populations of African plains game, including sable. The regal 550-pound sable male is a sight to behold, with the equally elegant females tipping the scale at around 490 pounds. With its beautiful arched back horns, dark coat, white belly, and black and white face, the sable makes a striking sight on the African plains. Their horns reach between 32-65 inches for a male, and a female’s horns reach 24-40 inches. These sharp accessories are not only for show, the sable can and will defend itself against predators, even impaling some along the way! Sables feed on grasses and herbs, preferring a water-rich habitat comprising of grasslands and woodland savanna-type vegetation. Sable hunting is a challenging affair, as these graceful antelopes are extremely wary and vigilant, with members of the herd always on high alert and issuing alarm calls when danger is spotted. This, along with their lightning-fast reflexes, makes for a testing stalk when approaching them. Sable hunting in Mozambique is usually undertaken using the spot-and-stalk technique or tracking. Some hunters prefer to target them from a hide and ambush them as they approach the waterhole, and this has also proven to be quite a successful endeavor, especially for hunters using a bow when hunting sable. Hunting sable is possible throughout the hunting season from April to October. These are the cooler winter months, where the vegetation will also be shorter and allow the hunter better visuals for his sable hunt.

Shot Placement for a Sable Antelope Hunt

The sable is renowned for being a challenging antelope to take down, so correct shot placement is critical when hunting sable. Correct shot placement will allow for an ethical and humane hunt. The hunter must focus his shot on the bottom third of the animal, just above the shoulder, where the front leg joins the body, as this will target the vital organs.

What Caliber Rifle is used when Sable Hunting?

As an African plains game animal, the sable is a large species, and therefore nothing less than a .270 will work for a sable hunt. While other 30-caliber rifles, such as the 30.06 and the .308 might be options, the hunter can also consider larger calibers, such as a .338 or .375 which will work well when loaded with solids. If the hunt will include long distance shooting, consider a 300-win mag or a .7mm.
