    About The Hunting Ground

The hunt takes place on a private 7,000-acre concession, with access to a further 200,000 acres in the surrounding area. This gives hunters access to approximately 207,000 acres (83,770 hectares) of hunting ground. The combination of private hunting and extensive additional access provides plenty of room to pursue Sable and Roan across varied Free State terrain. Hunters can experience expansive grasslands, open plains and gently undulating country, with pockets of thicker vegetation and natural water sources adding variety to the landscape. These changing conditions create excellent opportunities for glassing, stalking and adapting the hunt to the movement of the animals.

    The Hunting Outfitter

Outfitters Werner and Carmen have been involved in the hunting industry since 2008, offering personalized South African hunting packaged from their owner-managed operation in the Free State.

Their experience and hands-on approach provide hunters with knowledgeable guidance throughout the safari, from selecting suitable trophies to planning the best hunting approach. Guests can expect a professional yet personal experience, with the focus on making each hunt both successful and enjoyable.

Why Hunt Sable and Roan in the Free State?

Sable and Roan are among Africa’s most prestigious plains game hunting trophies, admired for their striking appearance, impressive horns and powerful presence. Their beauty, rarity and challenging nature make them highly sought-after by hunters looking to add exceptional trophies to their collection.

The Free State offers expansive open-country habitat and varied terrain, allowing hunters to glass for suitable trophies before planning a careful approach. The extensive hunting access also allows the Professional Hunter to adapt the strategy according to animal movement, weather and visibility.

Hunting Methods for Sable and Roan

Both Sable and Roan are wary antelope that require patience, careful observation and good fieldcraft. Hunting can involve glassing and spot-and-stalk approaches, with the Professional Hunter helping identify suitable trophies and plan the approach.

Water sources may also provide opportunities, particularly during warmer periods. The focus is always on identifying the correct trophy and making a controlled, ethical shot.

    Rifles and Shot Placement

Sable and Roan are large, powerful antelope, so a suitable caliber and precise shooting are important. A .30-06 or .308 Winchester with appropriate premium ammunition is a practical choice, while a .300 Winchester Magnum or .375 can also be considered, particularly for hunters who prefer additional power or expect longer shots.

Hunters should use a rifle they know well and shoot confidently. Accurate shot placement for large antelopes is essential for a clean and ethical harvest, particularly when pursuing these tough and powerful species.

When Is the Best Time to Hunt Sable and Roan in South Africa?

Hunting takes place throughout the year, although the cooler and drier months from April through October are generally preferred. During this period, shorter grass and reduced vegetation can improve visibility and make it easier to locate and evaluate suitable trophies.

Traveling to the Free State Hunting Grounds

International hunters will arrive at Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport before taking a regional flight to Kimberley Airport. Airlink is recommended for this route and accommodates hunters traveling with firearms. Hunters requiring an overnight stay in Johannesburg can consider Africa Sky Boutique, which can assist with airport transfers and firearm import requirements.

International hunters bringing their own rifles will need the required SAPS 520 documentation, along with supporting paperwork such as passport and airline ticket copies, a letter of invitation and proof of firearm ownership where applicable.
