The Free State Plains Game Hunting Safari

Located in South Africa's Free State province, this hunting outfitter has been in operations since 2008. Husband and wife team, Carmen and Werner, bring decades of experience to their operation and offer hunters access to a private 7,000-acre concession, with hunting access to a further 200,000 acres in the surrounding area.

The hunting area supports more than 30 species of game, including both plains game and dangerous game. This diversity creates opportunities for hunters to pursue several different species and experience varied terrain during a single safari.

For hunters considering hunting in South Africa, the Free State offers a different character from the bushveld regions of the country. Open plains, rolling terrain and expansive grasslands provide excellent conditions for glassing, stalking and spot-and-stalk hunting.

Hunting Methods in the Free State

Hunting is available throughout the year, although April through October is generally favored because the cooler, drier conditions result in shorter grass and improved visibility. Game is also more likely to concentrate around reliable water sources during the dry season.

The varied Free State terrain allows hunters to use a combination of glassing, spot-and-stalk and hunting from blinds, depending on the species and conditions. Impala, blesbok and zebra hunts can provide challenging stalks, while kudu are particularly rewarding to pursue in areas where the thick vegetation allows them to disappear from view.

The Greater Kudu, often called Africa's "Gray Ghost," is among the most sought-after spiral-horned antelope in Africa. Its elusive nature and ability to blend into its surroundings make kudu hunts a memorable part of this safari.

    Rifles and Shot Placement

A suitable rifle and accurate shooting are important when hunting a variety of plains game species. Calibers in the .270, 7mm and .30-caliber classes are popular choices for this type of safari, offering versatility across the included species.

Understanding shot placement for African game species is essential, particularly when hunting a range of animals with different body sizes and physical characteristics.

Traveling to the Free State Hunting Grounds

International hunters will arrive at Johannesburg's OR Tambo International Airport before taking a domestic flight to Kimberley Airport. Airlink is recommended for this route and offers a convenient connection for hunters travelling with firearms. Hunters who need to stay overnight in Johannesburg can consider Africa Sky Boutique. The hotel can assist with transfers to and from OR Tambo International Airport and also with firearm import permits and pre-clearance requirements.

International hunters bringing their own rifles will need to complete the required SAPS 520 firearm documentation and provide supporting paperwork, including a copy of their passport, airline tickets, a letter of invitation from Werner and the hunting team, and proof of firearm ownership where applicable.

Hunters should arrange firearm permits and related documentation well in advance of their departure to South Africa.
