Cape Buffalo hunts in South Africa (compared to Tanzania, Zambia and Mozambique) remain affordable and excellent value for money. When game hunting in Africa, Cape Buffalo hunts are considered to be one of the most dangerous, and as novice hunters will soon learn, Buffalo hunting is highly addictive. Social media is full with reels and content of charging Buffalo, due to their highly aggressive nature (along with poor shot placement). These “Dagga Boys” have intimidating horns and permanently a bad temperament.
Having intimate knowledge of Cape Buffalo shot placement could mean the difference between life and death, these beasts are danger personified. The only way to stop a charging Buffalo is a bullet to the head, into the brain. A Cape Buffalo is classified as dead when he is “in the salt”. It takes one bullet to kill a Buffalo, another good few to convince the Buffalo of that fact.
This trophy Buffalo hunt will be done on foot, following the traditional principles of fair chase. This is truly a dangerous game hunting safari, and these big ” Dugga Boys” with thick and heavy bosses will be found in “the thick stuff”. Johan and his team of trackers will work hard to find your dream trophy Buffalo. Some Buffalo Bulls may have deep drops and curls, others a wide spread, some broken horns from fighting. Guaranteed, they will are all mean as can be.
Cape Buffalo are cunning and wise. Buffalo are known to avoid and outsmart hunters. A charging Buffalo is going to come at you like a freight train, at more than thirty five miles an hour, destroying everything in its path. A Buffalo Bull shows no emotion or behavior change before a charge. Bring enough gun!! A Buffalo cow is no less dangerous to hunt. The world record Cape Buffalo is in fact a Cow!!

The best time to hunt in South Africa will be during the cooler months, from April until October. In summer, the temperatures are just too high, with increased humidity and decreased visibility due the thick areas.
We at Game hunting Safaris.com hunted Cape Buffalo in late November 2023 in the Limpopo Province. It really was hot and unpleasant, besides of course the increase in tick and insect activity, making the safari unpleasant.

On a hunt for Cape Buffalo, we at GHS are firm believers that there can never be “too much gun”. As much as shot placement is always a critical factor, the hunter needs a rifle with enough stopping power in case things go a little “sideways”.
