Hunting Gemsbok in south africa

Experience the Thrill Of Gemsbok Hunting in South Africa

When one considers the most majestic and genteel antelopes found in Africa, ranking high on that list, if not in the first place, is the gemsbok (Oryx gazella), also known as the gemsbuck or South African oryx. It is the largest antelope in the genus Oryx and is a powerfully built antelope. This regal antelope is a sought-after game hunting trophy when hunting in South Africa. Preferring hot, dry, arid regions, with rocky plains, the gemsbok is well-adapted to survive in these desolate regions and can survive without water for prolonged periods. Gemsbok are diurnal and nocturnal, venturing out at night when the temperature drops to forage and gather water from moisture-rich plants and roots. Gemsbok hunting in South Africa can occur all year round, with the most popular locations in the country for a gemsbok hunt being the Limpopo province, Eastern Cape, Western Cape, North West province, Free State, and Northern Cape. Gemsbok hunts should be undertaken early in the day for the best results. The gemsbok has a thick, horse-like neck and short mane with a muscular body. The antelope has a gray-brown coat, with a long black stripe running from the chin, through the neck and shoulder, along the flank of the antelope, and ending on the back of the leg, just above the white “socks” of the gemsbok. There is a black patch on the front of each leg and the antelope has a long black tail. Males tip the scales at around 500 pounds, while the females weigh up to 420 pounds. Their most striking feature is, of course, their long, straight, spear-like black horns. Females' horns are larger than the males of the species, reaching up to 48 inches versus the males’ horns of 33-38 inches. These horns are not simply accessories, and the gemsbok will use them in both defense against predators, as well as to attack other gemsbok when fighting.

More About South African Gemsbok Hunting

Shot Placement on an Gemsbok Hunt

A gemsbok is renowned for its exceptional senses, including sight, smell, and hearing, which makes for a challenging approach for the hunter! They are extremely alert and will warn others in the herd of danger. A quick reminder is that this African plains game antelope is extremely dangerous and aggressive when wounded, so ensure your shot placement is spot on! Steer clear of high-risk head or neck shots that can ruin the trophy. The best shot placement would be a broadside shot placement, aiming for the vital organs. Hunters must ignore the gemsbok hump on the top of its shoulder when measuring. Carefully measure a third of the way up the shoulder, to penetrate the vital organs. A well-placed shot will hit the heart, while a near miss will take out the lungs, resulting in a swift and humane death for the animal.

What Caliber Rifle is Used for Hunting Gemsbok?

Gemsbok are extremely tough African plains game antelopes. A well-placed bullet from a .270 shooting 150 grain with a muzzle velocity of at least 2700 feet per second will get the job done. When gemsbok hunting in South Africa, consider a large caliber rifle. Any .30 caliber loaded with 165 grain to 180, such as a .308, 30,06, or for longer shots a 300-win mag will work. A .375 with a solid 300-grain bullet is also often a favorite when hunting gemsbok in South Africa.
