This 10-day South African hunting safari takes place on a 380,000-acre private concession in the North West Province. The package includes seven fully exportable trophies, covering several of South Africa's classic plains game species.
South Africa is well established as a plains game hunting destination because of its variety of habitats, privately managed hunting areas and the number of species available across different provinces. Hunters can pursue several species during one safari, ranging from smaller antelope to larger species such as kudu and eland. This variety makes plains game hunts suitable for hunters wanting to pursue multiple species during a single African safari.
Jacques and Natalie have more than 20 years' experience in the hunting industry and host safaris on their North West Province concession. Their operation offers both plains game and dangerous game hunting, with Professional Hunters, trackers, skinners and camp staff supporting hunters throughout the safari.
The North West Province offers a mixture of flat terrain, grassland and scattered bushveld. These habitats support a wide range of plains game, with the open areas providing good visibility for glassing while thicker vegetation offers cover for stalking.
Most hunting is conducted using a traditional walk-and-stalk approach. Hunters glass suitable areas, identify game and use the terrain and vegetation to get within effective shooting range. Hunting from a blind may also be used where appropriate.
Kudu are known as Africa's "grey ghost" because their coloring and markings allow them to blend into the bush. Their keen eyesight and hearing also make them difficult to approach. Kudu hunting in South Africa generally involves careful glassing followed by a slow stalk through suitable cover.
Cape eland are the largest antelope species and can cover considerable ground. They may be hunted by walking and stalking through suitable habitat or from a blind. Hunters planning eland hunts should be prepared for longer walks and careful shot selection.
Zebra have excellent eyesight and are alert to movement, making patience important during the final approach. Walk-and-stalk is the primary hunting method for this unique trophy.
Nyala are generally found in thicker vegetation and can be hunted by stalking or from a blind. A suitable .270 or .30-caliber rifle can be used for this species.
Gemsbok hunts can be very challenging and this species is well adapted to open and semi-open areas. Gemsbok may require a longer stalk before a suitable shooting opportunity presents itself. Careful shot selection is important with this large antelope.
Impala are alert and quick to detect movement. Early morning and late afternoon can provide good opportunities, with walk-and-stalk the most common method.
Springbok are well suited to open country and rely on keen eyesight to detect approaching hunters. They can be hunted by stalking or from a blind. Springbok hunting in South Africa is often associated with open terrain and careful use of available cover.
A suitable rifle should be selected according to the species being hunted and the distances expected in the field. A .270 or .30-caliber rifle is suitable for many of the species on this package, while hunters should use ammunition and optics they are familiar with, to ensure a successful hunt.
Shot placement is more important than caliber alone. Kudu, eland, gemsbok and zebra are large, strong animals, so hunters should wait for a suitable angle and only take shots within their effective range. The Professional Hunter will assist with judging the animal, distance and shooting opportunity.
Before the safari, it is suggested that hunters review shot placement for African game.
Hunting takes place throughout the year, although April through October is generally preferred. During the cooler, drier months, shorter grass and less dense vegetation can make game easier to spot.
International hunters arrive at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg. The hunting area is approximately a 2.5-hour road transfer from the airport, with Jacques, Natalie or a member of their team meeting hunters on arrival.
Hunters bringing their own rifles into South Africa require the appropriate firearm-import documentation, including the SAPS 520 application. Supporting documents include a passport copy, airline tickets, letter of invitation and proof of firearm ownership. US hunters should also carry Customs Form 4457.
Rifle rental is available at US$20 per day.
