*** Observers welcome on the hunting safari at US$ 590 per day
The Selous, (now Nyerere) was named after the famous soldier and big game hunter, Frederick Courteney Selous. The reserve spans an area in excess of 19 000 square miles, plus “buffer zones” contributing to the sheer size. Owing to the the high levels of biodiversity and vast wilderness, in 1982 the Selous was named a World Heritage Site.
The Selous consists of natural landscapes, including grasslands and the Miombo Woodlands habitat and is home to Africa’s most iconic species, including all of the dangerous 7. While the reserve is broken into hunting blocks, human habitation is not allowed due to the sensitivity of many of the ecosystems in the reserve.
Hunting in the Selous is highly regulated and subject to strict Quota. It is considered to be the greatest “Free-Range” hunting in Africa.

Cape Buffalo hunting methods will follow the principals of “fair chase”. A typical day Buffalo hunting will start after a light breakfast and coffee, then head out to waterholes, or other areas to look for fresh spoor and signs of Buffalo activity. Once a suitable spoor is identified, hunters will set out on foot, tracking down a single “Dagga” Boy, or following a herd, hoping to identify mature trophy bulls. You and your professional hunter will carefully observe the herd, or try get “eyes” on a single bull.
Once a suitable bull is identified (age, horn size etc.) hunters will stalk and try get into shooting range. This hunting method is referred to as a “spot and stalk”. You can be guaranteed that this hunt will be “up close and personal”. Only a bullet in the brain is going to stop a Buffalo, charging at more than thirty miles an hour. Buffalo hunting in the Selous is an authentic hunting adventure.
