The African Cape Buffalo hunt is the crown jewel of dangerous game hunting. The Buffalo, often referred to as “Black Death,” is an animal that commands respect. This is not just a hunt; it is a test of nerve and skill. The Buffalo is unpredictable, powerful, and always alert. Knowing that one misstep could lead to a sudden charge by one of Africa’s most dangerous creatures.
Hunting in Limpopo, South Africa is not just about the big game; it is also a paradise for those seeking the adventure and reward thrill of a plains game hunt. The region is teeming with a variety of species, each presenting its own unique challenge. The Sable, with its striking features and curved horns, is a remarkable sight. Stalking this magnificent animal through the bush is a test of patience and precision, and when you finally line up your shot, the satisfaction is immense.
Then there are Roan, another regal presence in the wild. This animal’s size and strength make it a formidable target, requiring you to be at the top of your game. Kudu, with its spiral horns and uncanny ability to blend into the environment, is an expert in elusiveness. The hunt for Kudu often feels like a game of chess, where every move you make could be the difference between success and failure.
Waterbuck and Nyala add further variety to your plains game hunt. Waterbuck, often found near rivers or waterholes, is known for its resilience. Its distinctive white ring around the rump might give away its position, but taking a clean shot requires skill. Nyala, with their elegant spiral horns and shaggy coat, moves with a grace that can make it difficult to spot until it is almost too late. Hunting these animals requires sharp instincts and quick reflexes.

Hunting Africa’s “Widow Maker” will follow the principals of “fair chase”. A typical day Cape Buffalo hunting will start after a light breakfast and coffee, then head out to waterholes, or other areas to look for fresh spoor and signs of Buffalo activity. Once a suitable spoor is identified, hunters will set out on foot, tracking down a single “Dagga” Boy, or following a herd, hoping to identify mature trophy bulls. You and your professional hunter will carefully observe the herd, or try get “eyes” on a single bull.
Once a suitable bull is identified (age, horn size etc.), you and Patrick will stalk and try get into shooting range. This hunting method is referred to as a “spot and stalk”. You can be guaranteed that this hunt will be “up close and personal”. Only a bullet in the brain is going to stop a Buffalo, charging at more than thirty miles an hour. When coming face to face with Africa’s Black Death, extensive knowledge in terms of Buffalo Shot Placement will be required.
Outfitters and ranch owners hunting throughout the year are in possession of “P3 Exemption Permits” The cooler months, which run from April to October, are preferred. In summer, the temperatures are high and can exceed 10 Fahrenheit. The drier months see the grasses being shorter in the veld, and the bush veld not as dense, both of which allow hunters to more easily spot potential Sable trophies and management animals.
From early December to February, these months are known as the “wet season” in Limpopo. Rain showers and bad weather can continue for days. The preferred plains game hunting safari would take place between March and November.
To apply for a temporary import permit for sport hunting a SAPS 520 form will need to be completed. You will need to provide copy passports, copy airline tickets, letter of invitation from Patrick and proof of ownership (Firearm License or Customs declaration form 4457 for US citizens).
The temporary import permit allows for hunters to bring a maximum of four rifles, with neither two being the same caliber. No more than 200 rounds of ammunition per caliber.
