After landing at Johannesburg’s O.R. Tambo International Airport, you will be met by your outfitter, AH (as he likes to be called) or a member of his team. You will then depart by road transfer to the hunting area, where your Lion Hunting in South Africa safari will take place in the North West Province.. Leaving Johannesburg, the drive is around 4 hours, taking you through a variety of scenery, from the urban jungle of the Gauteng province to rural landscapes and areas of the North West province. The hunting grounds are situated outside Tosca and are renowned for their dangerous game hunting trophies.
The North West Province has long been recognised as one of South Africa's leading Dangerous Game Hunting destinations.. Hunters will find a mix of open savanna, semi-desert terrain, thornveld and bushveld, creating ideal conditions for tracking predators on foot.
While this is a captive-bred lion safari, hunters should not expect a passive or predictable hunt. These lions remain powerful apex predators and are pursued on foot through extensive hunting terrain. Encounters are often close, fast-moving and demand complete concentration from both hunter and professional hunter.
The landscape provides the perfect backdrop for a spot and stalk, with the terrain including open grasslands, hilly areas as well as semi-desert regions. To the west of the province, the area is both drier and flatter, while the eastern section of the North West province is known to have more bushveld-type terrain.

After a day in the field, hunters can relax at the lodge and enjoy comfortable accommodation, daily housekeeping, laundry services and traditional South African meals. Evenings are often spent around the fire discussing the day's stalks and planning the next morning's hunt. As part of your dining experience, expect a variety of meat dishes including meat from local hunting safaris. And, of course, no safari is complete without a traditional South African braai!
This location is renowned for its prized lion trophies. While it is a captive-bred lion hunting adventure, these African cats are wild and aggressive, providing the hunter with a challenging hunting experience.
Offering a traditional hunting experience, the hunt will be a spot and stalk on foot, so ensure that you are fit enough to keep pace as you maneuver your way through the bush-veld terrain. The tracker will lead you closer to the apex predator, keep your wits about you, and remember to make that first shot count! As with any dangerous game animal, proper shot placement is critical. Hunters unfamiliar with the anatomy of Africa's largest cats should review our Lion Shot Placement guide before arriving in camp.
The addition of a lioness trophy creates a very different hunting dynamic. Many professional hunters regard lionesses as equally challenging quarry due to their alert nature, sharp instincts and tendency to use available cover exceptionally well.
This package is particularly popular among hunters looking for a guided lion and lioness hunt in South Africa, with both trophies included during the same safari.
You can expect to wake up, before sunrise and begin the day with breakfast and coffee in the main hunting lodge. Thereafter, as the sun rises, you will head out with the trackers and dangerous game professional hunters.
The hunting party begins by driving the roads looking for fresh tracks from the previous night's movements. Lions are generally most active during the hours of darkness, making fresh tracks from the previous night's movements the starting point for most morning hunts.
This hunt is all about tracking and stalking a Lion on foot, so be prepared. A mature lion often uses terrain, wind direction and cover to its advantage. Following tracks through thick bush demands patience and discipline from the entire hunting party.
Once you get a visual on the Lion, you and your PH will find the best place to set up and take your shot from. Lions have very little sense of humour when pressured and can react aggressively if they feel cornered. Don’t miss. It’s a heart-pounding and exciting hunt that puts you right up close and personal.
The trophies will eventually find their place on the wall, but the memories usually come from the stalks, the tracks, the moments when the bush goes quiet, and the sudden realization that the lion knows exactly where you are.
