Hunting the African buffalo, often referred to as “Black Death,” is a rite of passage for many big game hunters in South Africa. This formidable animal is renowned not just for its size but also for its unpredictable nature. With five full days of hunting planned, every moment in the field will be exhilarating. Wounding a Cape Buffalo can lead to disastrous consequence and this Buffalo hunt is going to be “up close and personal !!!
This trophy Cape Buffalo hunt will be done on foot, following the traditional principles of fair chase. This is truly a dangerous game hunting safari, and these big boys will be found in “the thick stuff”. Gerhard and team will work hard to find your dream buffalo. Some Buffalo will have deep drops and curls, others a wide spread with heavy bosses. One thing that is guaranteed is,they are all mean as can be. Buffalo are called “Window-makers” for good reason.
Cape Buffalo are exceptionally cunning and wise. Buffalo are known to avoid and outsmart hunters. A charging Buffalo is going to come to you like a freight train. Charging at more than thirty five miles an hour, destroying everything in its path, with the only purpose being to gauge you to death. A Buffalo shows no emotion or behavior change before a charge and only a bullet in the brain will stop him at full charge.
The Cape Buffalo is an exceptionally tough member of the African big 5. Poorly hit, Cape Buffalo are incredibly difficult to stop. Social media platforms are forever posting Cape Buffalo charges, and many outfitters who were not on their game on the day, have either moved on to meet their makers, or have battle scars as a permanent reminder.
As they say, it takes one bullet to kill a Cape Buffalo, and another good few to convince him of the fact. It is the dead Buffalo that will kill you.
Buffalo shot placement is all about anchoring the animal. Head shots will be avoided, unless the Buffalo is in full charge. The preferred shot would be a third of the way up the shoulder, into the vitals, immediately followed up by a few more well-placed bullets ensuring that the Buffalo is anchored and in fact dead. Approach with caution.
South Africa is not regulated with regards to a specific hunting season and Buffalo hunts can take place all year round. The cooler months, which run from April to October are preferred. In summer, the temperatures are just to high which can make Buffalo hunting even more of a challenge. Tamlyn hunted a Cape Buffalo in the Limpopo Province, South Africa in late November 2023. While the Buffalo measure over 42 inches, Tamlyn started off with a poor shot, low in the brisket. 8 hours of walking in the heat is not pleasant and can lead to dehydration and poor judgement. You need to be on top of your game on a Buffalo hunt.
The months of November through to February are also the rainy season. Rain showers and bad weather can continue for days, literally placing a “damper” on the hunting safari.
