Buffalo Hunt
Hunting Africa's Black Death will follow the principals of “fair chase”. A typical day Buffalo hunting will start after a light breakfast and coffee, then head out to waterholes, or other areas to look for fresh spoor and signs of Buffalo activity. Once a suitable spoor is identified, hunters will set out on foot, tracking down a single "Dagga" Boy, or following a herd, hoping to identify mature trophy bulls. You and your professional hunter will carefully observe the herd, or try get “eyes” on a single bull.
Once a suitable bull is identified (age, horn size etc.) hunters will stalk and try get into shooting range. This hunting method is referred to as a “spot and stalk”. You can be guaranteed that this hunt will be "up close and personal". Only a bullet in the brain is going to stop a Buffalo, charging at more than thirty miles an hour. When coming face to face with Africa’s Black Death, extensive knowledge in terms of Buffalo Shot Placement will be required.
The best time to hunt Cape Buffalo in South Africa, particularly in Limpopo Province, largely depends on personal preferences and factors such as weather, vegetation, and animal behavior. However, the dry season, typically from May to October, is often considered the prime time for hunting Cape Buffalo.
During the dry season, vegetation is sparse, making it easier to spot and track game. Additionally, water sources become scarce, leading animals, including Cape Buffalo, to gather around remaining waterholes, increasing the likelihood of successful hunts. The cooler temperatures during this time also make for more comfortable hunting conditions.
On a Cape Buffalo hunt, we at Game Hunting Safaris are firm believers that there can never be "too much gun". As much as shot placement is always a critical factor, the hunter needs a rifle with stopping power. Buffalo can weigh in at in excess of 2000 pounds.
A .375 loaded with decent quality 300 grain bullets is the minimum legal requirement when dangerous game hunting in South Africa. But bigger caliber rifles such as a .458, .458 Lott, .404, .416 are also recommended along with any big double.
When making your choice of what rifle to bring, as a rule of thumb bring the biggest caliber that you can accurately shoot and handle with confidence.
While the provision of a suitable hunting rifle is included on this African hunt, you may want to bring your own, being familiar and knowing trajectories etc. To import a firearm into South Africa for the purpose of hunting, you will need to complete a SAPS 520 form which you can obtain online.
International hunters bringing their own rifles will need to provide copy passports, copy airline tickets, letter of invitation from Gerhard and proof of ownership (Customs declaration form 4457 for US citizens).
Please note that terms, conditions and price are subject to change without notice and rates at the time of the hunt will apply
