    Hippo Hunting in South Africa

Situated near the Kruger National Park, this area is famous for producing some exceptionally large Hippos. Hippo hunts continue to grow in popularity as dangerous game hunters realize the action-packed, adrenaline-filled hunts available when hunting this semi-aquatic mammal. A heads up that getting between a charging Hippo and the water is not a good idea, with the only option to stop the animal  being a bullet into the brain with a large caliber rifle.

We at Game Hunting Safaris.com have been privileged enough to go Hippo hunting in Namibia and highly recommend this exciting and challenging safari.

Shot Placement on a Hippo Hunt

When it comes to dangerous game hunting, one thing to keep in mind is accurate shot placement, especially when dealing with a large hippo, which at any time can become quite aggressive and charge.

While wallowing in the water, a perfect shot for a Hippo will be either between the eyes into the brain, or from the side, between the ear and the eye. A near miss in deep water will result in your trophy Hippo vanishing, never to be seen again. On land, your dangerous game PH will recommend a bullet into the heart from the broadside position.

The African Outfitter hosting the Hunt

Since 2007, Wesley and his team have been operating  and conducting plains and dangerous game hunts in Southern Africa, including South Africa, Zimbabwe, Namibia and Mozambique. The team is focused on delivering personal hunting experiences creating life long memories.

In South Africa, hunts are conducted in the Eastern Cape, Limpopo and the  Free State Province where different species of animals are targeted and hunted. If you are looking for a top class hunting safari, and an exceptional hunting experience, you are at the right place, as Wesley and the team are one of the most highly acclaimed operators in South Africa.

When is the best time to book a Hippo Hunt in South Africa?

South Africa is not regulated with regards to a specific hunting season and hunting can take place all year round. The cooler months, which run from April to October are preferred. In summer, the temperatures are just to high which can make hunting even more of a challenge. The months of November through to February are also the rainy season. Rain showers and bad weather can continue for days, literally placing a “damper” on the hunting safari.

    Rifle Imports and Permits

To import a firearm into South Africa for the purpose of Sport Hunting,  you will need to complete a SAPS 520 form. International hunters bringing their own rifles will need to provide copy passports, copy airline tickets, letter of invitation from Wesley and proof of ownership. (Customs declaration form 4457 for US citizens).

So, if you are ready for a dangerous game hunting adventure of a lifetime, look no further than the Limpopo Province.

    Additional information

The best time to enjoy hippo hunting in South Africa, particularly in Kruger Region, largely depends on personal preferences and factors such as weather, vegetation, and animal behavior. However, the dry season, typically from May to October, is often considered the prime time for hunting Hippo.

During the dry season, vegetation is sparse, making it easier to spot and track game. Additionally, water sources become scarce, leading animals, especially Hippo, to gather around remaining waterholes, increasing the likelihood of successful hunts. The cooler temperatures during this time also make for more comfortable hunting conditions.
