Mozambique’s famed Zambezi Delta region is known for its unique tropical hunting environment. Our hunting area, located on the northern perimeter of the delta, is a prime area made of lush coastal forests, dense riverine vegetation, palm savanna, pans and papyrus swamps. This unique area offers the discerning hunter a true hunting experience, very different from other areas in the country.
Our area is a Cape buffalo hunter’s paradise with this being the primary quarry on most visitor’s wish-lists. Hunted on foot in the traditional manner, clients will have ample opportunity to find the bull of their dreams, either in the open palm-studded savannas or in the dense thickets that are sure to cause even the most intrepid hunter to experience an adrenaline rush. The endemic Roosevelt’s Sable, long-horned Common Waterbuck, and Common Reedbuck are all found in abundance. Our hunting area is especially known for plentiful bushpigs—often taken during the day—exceptional Warthogs, and monster Chobe bushbuck.
The hunting area has a humid tropical climate and is generally warm all year, with cool evenings and hot days during the dry hunting season (August – November). Average temperatures during this time range from 60° to 95° F (15° – 35° C). The rainy season broadly coincides with the heat and humidity of the hot months, between November–March. Mozambique is a malaria area and clients should take the necessary precautions. We suggest Malarone tablets, but advise clients to consult with their personal physician. Your professional hunter carries a first aid kit and sophisticated medical services are available in the larger Mozambique towns and cities. We highly recommend that clients wear long trousers and long-sleeve shirts during their hunt. The hunting area is vast and unspoiled, which also means that our hunting is not for the unfit. It is very important to come physically prepared to walk upwards of 10 km per day when tracking Cape Buffalo in order to expect a reasonable level of success. It is highly recommended that you train for this type of hunting in the months leading up to your safari so that you arrive in a good level of physical fitness.
Clients should travel via Johannesburg, South Africa to Beira, Mozambique where a charter flight will bring clients directly to the hunting camp airstrip. The charter flight is an additional fee and we do our utmost to piggy-back safaris so that clients can share the cost of these fees. Charter rates normally run ± $3,750 round-trip for a C206 and take approximately 1h15m, so it is possible to reduce these costs by up to half if scheduling allows. Please note that the charter would need to be booked at least 2 months in advance.
[caption id="attachment_30136" align="alignleft" width="300"]The well-appointed Camp is situated along a beautiful floodplain and consists of four bungalows with en-suite bathrooms that are adequately spaced apart for the utmost privacy. Guests can look forward to enjoying gourmet meals every day, prepared by the in-camp chef. Coastal Mozambique uniquely offers locally sourced "surf & turf" dining that is rarely found in other hunting camps in Africa. Fresh prawns from the river and wild game meat cooked to perfection are the specialties. Fruits and vegetables are hand-grown and harvested from the gardens, and the staff even risks their lives to chase off the occasional thieving elephant to protect our produce!
For large dangerous game (Buffalo, Lion, Hippo) the minimum required caliber for use in Mozambique is the .375 H&H. The.375 H&H is the only suitable option for a one-rifle battery as it can be used with excellent results for both dangerous game and plains game alike. For the client who prefers two rifles, we recommend that a plains game rifle should be anything from 7mm upwards, but preferably any of the .300 calibers. Dangerous game rifles should be a minimum of .375 H&H, but anything .400 and upwards is preferable for Buffalo and Hippo, so long as the client is comfortable and can shoot accurately with it. Bowhunting is allowed in Mozambique for plains game (not on buffalo or other dangerous game).
We have several .375 H&H rifles with Swarovski optics for client rental if preferred. At $45 / day and $15 / round of ammunition this is a good option for those not wanting to hassle with traveling with their own firearms.
