The hunting areas of Niassa in northern Mozambique consist of vast wilderness terrain dominated by dense Miombo woodland, rolling savanna, seasonal river systems, and thick bushveld habitat. Sandy soils, scattered granite outcrops, dry riverbeds, and extensive untouched vegetation create challenging yet rewarding conditions for traditional African hunting safaris conducted on foot in one of the continent’s last remaining wild frontier regions.

The Iluma WMA is a 127,000-acre free-range concession in the Selous region, with miombo woodland, floodplain grassland, riverine forest, and plenty of thick cover. For hunting lion in Tanzania, this is the kind of country where tracks and patience matter. For leopard hunting in Tanzania, the dense cover and bait activity make it a proper test.
The area also supports a wide range of wildlife, including Cape buffalo, elephant, hyena, wild dog, and plains game such as eland, bushbuck, puku, sable, and Kirk’s dik-dik. The Kilombero River flows through the concession, and camp is set close to the river, giving hunters good game viewing and proper Selous scenery between hunting days. The season runs from 01 July to 31 December.
Hasheem was born and raised in the Selous, so this is not terrain he learned from a brochure. He grew up around wildlife, conservation, and the realities of the bush, and later started his own safari company more than 10 years ago.

• Hunters need to fly into Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam.
• There are two options from Dar es Salaam – either an 8-hour road transfer to camp (US$ 3,000 return) or a train ride from Dar es Salaam to Morogoro (1.5 hr) at US$ 410 return, after which the drive to camp is then shortened to 3 hours at US$ 1,200 return.
• Alternatively, a charter flight is available at an additional fee.
The following vaccinations are required before entry into Tanzania:
• Yellow Fever: This is only required if you are arriving from or transiting for more than 12-24 hours from a country with a high risk of yellow fever transmission, and is NOT required if you are traveling directly from the US or Europe. Apart from being up to date with your routine vaccinations, it is also recommended to include the following in your regimen: Rabies, Meningitis. Polio, Tdap Vaccine (Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis), Typhoid, and Hepatitis A & B.
• Hunt with an experienced PH who knows the area, the species, and the local conditions.
• Listen to your PH. Their job is to help you get the right opportunity — and get everyone back to camp in one piece.
• Before arriving, it is worth familiarising yourself with proper shot placement for hunting game in Africa, as understanding the anatomy of the species you are pursuing can make a major difference once the pressure of the hunt begins.
• The minimum legal caliber for dangerous game hunting in Tanzania is .375, so make sure your rifle meets the requirement.
• Don’t rush the shot. Take the time you need when the opportunity comes.
• Be ready for a follow-up shot if needed. Dangerous game does not always read the script.
• Use the wind and vegetation properly when approaching game.
• Stay alert. The Selous is wild country, and the bush does not wait for anyone.
This is a true leopard hunting safari, but with lion included as part of the same 21-day Selous package — a strong option for hunters wanting a serious big cat hunt without rushing the process. It offers big country, proper free-range hunting, and the kind of safari that stays with you long after the dust has been washed off your boots.
