Hunting eland in Namibia is a favorite pastime for many hunters wishing to target this huge African plains game antelope. Namibia is home to two types of eland, namely the Livingstone as well as the Cape or Common eland. Firstly, the Livingstone eland is found and hunted to the north of Namibia, in the Zambezi region, formerly known as the Caprivi Strip, a prime game hunting location. This area is teeming with African plains game, amongst them the mighty eland. Next, the Cape eland, also known as the Common eland, is more plentiful than the Livingstone eland and scattered throughout the eastern parts of the country. The difference between the two eland types is that the Livingstone eland has a larger body and horns that its counterpart, the Cape eland. The eland is a large, solid antelope, weighing 2,200 pounds and is often targeted for its beautiful spiral-shaped horns. It has a noticeable little bush of air on its forehead and a large dewlap, with a large, muscular body. Targeting Africa’s largest antelope is an exciting and testing game hunting adventure! This African plains game antelope doesn’t make life easy for those hunting it, with its ability to camouflage itself as well as being able to clear heights of up to 8 feet with ease!

Namibia’s game hunting season runs from February to November, while the best time to enjoy eland hunting in Namibia is during the dry season, from June to August. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists the eland with a status of “least concern” and no special permits are required for this African plains game hunting adventure. Bow hunting in Namibia targeting this African plains game species is also allowed.
Shot Placement while Eland Hunting in Namibia
When hunting eland in Namibia there are two main methods employed, namely the spot, walk, and stalk method and secondly, the ambush method. Spot, Walk, and Stalk Eland Hunting Method: Hunters will search the veld, glassing the area and looking for a trophy eland bull. Should a suitable bull be found, the hunting safari will carefully stalk the eland. Ambush Method of Eland hunting: As eland are water dependent, an area will be identified with a high volume of traffic and a blind will be set up where the hunting party will wait for the eland to appear. The animal will then be targeted from the blind. Shot placement on this monster antelope is the same as any other large antelope. While a frontal shot may get your animal in the salt, it will also ruin your game hunting trophy. The broadside shot is recommended when hunting eland in Namibia. Aim for a third of the way up the front shoulder and the bullet will enter the heart. If the shot misses by a small margin, the lungs will still be hit, resulting in the eland’s quick and humane death.
What Caliber Rifle is Used for Eland Hunting in Namibia?
Eland hunting in Namibia comes with its own set of challenges, including a highly alert herd that are constantly aware, making a walk-and-stalk hunt rather challenging. When hunting eland in Namibia use a good 30-caliber rifle or higher. Ensure that you are comfortable with the rifle and able to shoot accurately, as a wounded eland can be aggressive and dangerous; and tracking a wounded eland is no joke.
