Few destinations still offer the scale, wilderness, and traditional safari atmosphere found when hunting in Tanzania. Vast unfenced hunting areas, exceptional dangerous game populations, and the opportunity to pursue a wide range of species in truly wild country have made Tanzania one of Africa’s most respected safari destinations for generations.
Beyond Lion and Cape Buffalo, Tanzania is also renowned for exceptional plains game hunts, with species such as Puku, Patterson’s Eland, Suni, Coke’s Hartebeest, Lichtenstein’s Hartebeest, and a variety of East African gazelles available throughout different regions of the country. Combined with traditional tented safari camps, experienced professional hunters, and some of Africa’s most breathtaking wilderness landscapes, Tanzania continues to offer one of the most authentic dangerous game hunting experiences remaining on the continent.
The Lunda Nkwambi GCA is one of western Tanzania’s most remote and unspoiled hunting areas, offering vast wilderness landscapes, low human populations, and an authentic East African safari atmosphere. Spanning more than 400 square miles, the concession consists of open savannas, dense woodland, river systems, and varied natural habitats that support an exceptional diversity of wildlife throughout the region.
Widely respected for its outstanding lion hunts, the area is also well known for quality leopard hunting safaris, exceptional elephant hunts, and healthy populations of Cape Buffalo and numerous plains game species. The size, remoteness, and biodiversity of the concession create the kind of traditional free-range dangerous game experience that has made Tanzania legendary among safari hunters worldwide.
Careful wildlife management, conservation programs, anti-poaching initiatives, and community involvement all play an important role in preserving the long-term sustainability of the concession. Combined with the quality of the hunting experience and the untamed nature of the region itself, Lunda Nkwambi remains one of Tanzania’s premier dangerous game hunting blocks.

This African hunt has it all covered, from dangerous game such as Lion and Cape Buffalo to highly sought after antelope species.

All trophy fees include Tanzanian Government fees, community development levies, and anti-poaching contributions.
In addition to Lion and Cape Buffalo, hunters visiting Tanzania often take advantage of the opportunity to pursue other members of Africa’s Dangerous 7 during the same safari. The river systems and wetland areas surrounding the concession provide excellent opportunities for Hippo hunts, while Tanzania is also renowned for exceptional crocodile hunts, with Nile Crocodiles exceeding 16 feet regularly taken in suitable areas throughout the country.
Dangerous game hunting in Tanzania is strictly regulated to ensure ethical hunting practices, sustainable wildlife management, and the long-term conservation of game populations throughout the country. Hunters may only pursue species that fall within the conditions of their allocated hunting license, while all hunting is conducted according to Tanzanian wildlife regulations and quota systems.
Animals may not be hunted from vehicles or chased, and all hunting activities take place during legal daylight hours only. Females, immature animals, and young trophies are strictly protected, while Lion hunting regulations require that only mature males estimated to be older than six years of age may be harvested. These regulations play an important role in maintaining Tanzania’s reputation as one of Africa’s premier free-range dangerous game hunting destinations.

The minimum legal caliber requirement for dangerous game hunting in Tanzania is a .375 caliber rifle. While the .375 H&H remains one of the most popular and widely respected dangerous game calibers in Africa, many experienced hunters pursuing Cape Buffalo and Lion prefer larger calibers such as the .404 Jeffery, .416 Rigby, .458 Winchester Magnum, or .458 Lott for additional stopping power in close-range situations. Traditional double rifles chambered in calibers such as the .470 Nitro Express and larger are also highly regarded, particularly when hunting dangerous game in thick cover.
Before arriving in Tanzania, hunters should spend time practicing from realistic field positions and familiarize themselves with proper shot angles and shot placement for hunting dangerous game, particularly when pursuing potentially dangerous species such as Lion and Cape Buffalo.
Handgun hunting is strictly prohibited in Tanzania, while dangerous game may not be hunted with a bow or crossbow. Bowhunting is permitted for certain plains game species, although bowhunting licenses and permit costs are generally more expensive than standard rifle hunting licenses.
Accommodation during the safari is provided in comfortable East African safari tents overlooking the surrounding wilderness and nearby river systems. Hunters can expect spacious en-suite tented accommodation with hot water, Wi-Fi, comfortable beds, and all essential amenities needed after long days in the field.
The camp features traditional thatched entertainment and dining areas where hunters can relax around the fire, enjoy spectacular views across the river, and experience the atmosphere of a classic African safari camp. Meals are freshly prepared by the resident chef using local ingredients, fresh produce, and hearty safari-style cooking, creating an authentic wilderness experience without sacrificing comfort.
When traveling to Tanzania, international hunters should arrive at either Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam or Kilimanjaro International Airport near Arusha. From there, hunters will continue to Dodoma via a domestic Precision Air flight before transferring by road to the hunting concession.
Flights from Dar es Salaam to Dodoma take approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes and cost around US$ 300 return, while flights from Kilimanjaro International Airport to Dodoma take approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes at a return cost of around US$ 150. Upon arrival in Dodoma, hunters will travel approximately 3½ hours by road to reach the safari camp and hunting area.
Hunters traveling to Tanzania should ensure that all routine vaccinations are up to date before departure and are encouraged to consult their doctor or travel clinic regarding recommended vaccinations and preventative medication for East Africa.
A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is only required if you are arriving from, or transiting through for more than 12–24 hours, a country with a high risk of Yellow Fever transmission. Hunters traveling directly from the United States or Europe generally do not require a Yellow Fever certificate for entry into Tanzania.
Recommended vaccinations and preventative medication may include Hepatitis A & B, Typhoid, Rabies, Polio, Meningitis, Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis), as well as malaria prophylaxis depending on the season and hunting region within Tanzania.
