Distinguished by its tranquillity, economic and political stability, stands out as the ideal big game destination for passionate hunting enthusiasts. Offering vibrant landscapes, diverse cultures, and unparalleled game hunting experiences, Namibia has emerged as a premier choice for an exciting African hunting adventure.
Namibia is the only African country that offers hunting safaris for of Africa’s entire Dangerous 7 and allows hunting of Cheetah. Namibia also offers endemic sought after plains game hunts for Damara Dik-Dik and Black Faced Impala.
For a Trophy Leopard hunt, the central region of Namibia offers prime terrain. Hunting areas like Omaruru are renowned for their diverse game populations and are where much of the leopard hunting takes place. Omaruru is a 2.5-hour drive from Windhoek.
Nelson has been hunting Africa and Namibia for more than twenty years specializing in dangerous game safaris, including Rhino. Nelson has a 100% success rate on Leopards and big cats are his specialty.
With a focus on family values, Nelson encourages observers and children to join the hunt, with an emphasis on teaching and educating youth. Leopard hunts take place in central Namibia, with Hippo, Crocodile, Cape Buffalo and Elephant hunts taking place in the Caprivi (Zambezi Region).
When embarking on the hunting adventure in Namibia, the safari begins with international hunters arriving at Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDH), located 30 miles from Windhoek. This is the primary gateway to Namibia, with flights arriving from major hubs like Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Europe. On arrival, Nelson will meet you in Windhoek and transfer will be by road to the hunting concession in Omaruru, taking approximately three hours.
Depending on your arrival time in Windhoek, or even staying a few extra days by choice (which is recommended), you may need to overnight in Windhoek. The Hilton Hotel is great and has secure facilities for rifle storage, plus a great rooftop bar and pool. The Hilton can also arrange your collection/transfers from Hosea Kutako and drop off for your departing flight (plus the breakfasts are awesome). There are many fabulous hotels in Windhoek.
The city offers a variety of venues for dining and sampling a few of the local beers and steaks, such as “The Butchers Block”, or ” Joe’s Beer house”. We can recommend both.
Windhoek is also easy to navigate and travel is affordable due to the weak currency (Namibian Dollar). You can download the Yango App, and make use of Windhoek;s version of Uber”. Near the hotels and in walking distance, are a variety of retail shopping facilities for any last minute purchases (or to purchase a bottle of your favorite malt)
The Omaruru region in Namibia, situated 160 miles from Windhoek, offers an incredible mix of excitement, challenge and reward for hunters. The Omaruru hunting concession is well known for diverse landscapes and abundance of game. For hunters passionate about plains game and big cat trophy hunting, this area delivers a unique blend of game species and landscapes that keeps the adventure alive from start to finish.
Besides Klipspringer and Damara Dik-Dik which is included, a wide variety of plains game hunting opportunities can be added to this safari in Namibia including Springbuck, Kudu, Oryx, Blue Wildebeest, Impala and Cape Eland to name but a few.
Leopard hunting in Namibia is one of the most intense forms of hunting you can experience. These predators are masters of stealth, blending seamlessly into their environment, which makes hunting Leopard a test of patience and skill.
In Namibia’s Omaruru region, you will hunt Leopard in rocky terrain, thick brush and areas of open savanna as you try to outwit this elusive cat. Leopards are mostly nocturnal, adding another level of difficulty to the hunt. Often, hunters will spend hours in blinds, waiting for just the right moment when the big Tom cat emerges. Leopard hunting is a game of “Cat and Mouse”, seeing who can outwith who!!
The heart-pounding anticipation, followed by the sight of this magnificent predator makes the entire journey worthwhile.
The hunting concession covers thousands of acres, meaning there are plenty of big cats available. In Namibia Tom cats get huge, over 170 pounds. Nelson and team, prior to your arrival, will start baiting selected areas to start the process of attracting a cat to a bait. Leopards have large territories, covering many miles so baits will be placed in many different areas.
A typical day on a Leopard hunt will be to leave the hunting lodge at first light after a light breakfast. You and the team will then head out, traversing the concession, checking and restocking baited area. Trails cams are used to check activity and to identify size, sex and age of the Leopard once on the bait. Once a suitable Leopard has been identified, a temporary blind will be constructed using local materials and it will then be “game on”. The game of patience will begin. Leopards also respond well to callers, such as the Fox Pro units. The challenge of course in this instance is getting the cat to within shooting distance.
As Namibia does not allow dangerous game hunting with a bow, a Leopard on this safari cannot be hunted in with a bow/cross bow. A trophy Leopard no matter where you are hunting in Africa is classified as a fully mature male.
While the excitement of hunting a Leopard grabs center stage, the plains game hunt portion brings its own challenges and rewards. The Damara Dik-Dik is a small, skittish antelope, moving swiftly through dense bush, endemic to Namibia and is one of the most coveted tiny ten trophies. Hunting this species in the region requires a sharp eye and steady aim, as their speed and size make them tricky targets. Patience is key, as these little antelope can disappear into the brush in the blink of an eye.
Klipspringer provides an entirely different hunting challenge. Found on the rocky outcrops and in the thick brush, this sure-footed and agile antelope is an exceptional trophy.
The hunting lodge is Namibia is set between mountains, with all the comforts of home. The lodge has incredible views, spacious rooms with stunning views of the African landscape. The Namibia hunting lodge features a open bar, decorated in a typical African hunting style, the perfect setting to enjoy a cold beverage ending a successful hunt. WiFi is available with permanent electricity. Cuisine with follow typical gourmet African style, with a hint of German influence.
Namibia’s hunting season is from February to November, the summer months of December and January are just too hot. High temperatures can lead to dehydration and plains game hunting is just too unpleasant.
The Namibian government understands the contributions being made by hunters and you will be welcomed into Namibia. Should you choose to bring your own rifle, it is a simple, quick and painless process. You will need to complete a Namibian Firearm permit. On arrival at Hosea Kutako International Airport, you will need to proceed to firearm collections. The Namibian Police have an office outside international arrivals. Once you present the police officials with proof of ownership and the letter of invitation from Nelson , you will be issued a permit at no cost.
Protective clothing should be manufactured from light cotton fabric, with colors matching the environment, such as olive, khaki and greens.
Temperatures, depending on the month of the hunting safari can vary by as much as 35 Fahrenheit, so jackets providing warmth and insulation are important, as well as gloves and “woolly hats”. While a four-by-four truck may be used to cover greater distances as the hunting concession is large. Departure and arrivals times may be in the early/late hours when temperatures are cool.
Pack a good quality and comfortable pair of walking boots, extra laces are always a good idea. Do not over pack as the lodge does provide daily laundry services.
