    About The Hunting Ground

The Caprivi Strip consists primarily of flat floodplains, winding river channels, shallow marsh systems, reed beds, and dense riverine vegetation shaped by the region’s permanent water sources. Thick grass, muddy embankments, soft sandy soils, and scattered woodland create ideal habitat for Hippo and other dangerous game species while also making movement through the area physically demanding and unpredictable. During the dry season, water levels drop and animals concentrate along the river systems, while the wet season can see large sections of the region flood extensively, transforming the Caprivi into a vast network of waterways and wetlands.

    Why go Hippo hunting?

For hunters wanting to experience true dangerous game hunting in Namibia, few safaris compare to the excitement and unpredictability of hunting trophy hippo in the Caprivi Strip. Hippo are amongst Africa’s most aggressive and dangerous animals, known for their territorial behavior, immense size, crushing jaws, and ability to move surprisingly fast both in and out of the water.

A successful hippo hunting safari requires patience, accurate shooting, and the ability to carefully stalk within range along reed-lined river systems and muddy embankments where visibility is often limited. Unlike many hunters imagine, Hippo hunting in the Caprivi is rarely straightforward, with thick vegetation, deep water channels, Nile Crocodiles, and roaming Cape Buffalo all adding to the challenge and atmosphere of the safari.

Beyond the trophy itself, a Hippo hunt in Namibia offers hunters the opportunity to experience one of southern Africa’s last truly wild safari destinations while hunting within the pristine landscapes and waterways of the Caprivi Strip.

    The Outfitter

    Rifle facilities

Nelson has been hunting throughout Africa and Namibia for more than twenty years, specializing in traditional dangerous game safaris with a particular passion for Hippo hunting in the Caprivi Strip. His extensive experience within the Zambezi Region, combined with a 100% success rate on trophy hippo hunts, has earned him a respected reputation amongst dangerous game hunters visiting Namibia.

With a strong focus on family values and authentic safari experiences, Nelson welcomes observers and younger family members to join the safari, placing emphasis on education, mentorship, and introducing future generations to ethical African hunting traditions and wildlife conservation.

While his trophy Hippo, Crocodile, Cape Buffalo, and Elephant hunts are conducted within the Caprivi Strip (Zambezi Region), Nelson also offers highly successful Leopard hunts within the Omaruru hunting concessions of central Namibia. His dangerous game safaris combine experienced professional hunting, quality concessions, and genuine Namibian hospitality within some of southern Africa’s most remote and wildlife-rich hunting areas.

Hunting Hippo in the Caprivi Strip

For hunters seeking a true dangerous game hunting in Namibia experience, few safaris compare to pursuing trophy Hippo within the remote waterways of the Caprivi Strip. This wild and untamed region, filled with winding river channels, reed-lined embankments, floodplains, and thick vegetation, provides ideal habitat for Hippo while creating an unpredictable and physically demanding hunting environment.

Having personally hunted Hippo in this region, we can confidently say that it is far more challenging than the social media images often suggest. This is not simply a case of shooting “sleeping” Hippo floating in the water. The river systems are filled with large Nile Crocodiles, while herds of Cape Buffalo regularly move through the area crossing the Chobe River from neighboring Botswana, adding another level of excitement and danger to the safari.

Hippo hunting in the Caprivi is best conducted during the dry season when water levels are lower and movement through the region is more manageable. During the wet months, large sections of the Caprivi fill like a bathtub, dramatically increasing the difficulty of tracking and recovering Hippo within the flooded channels and dense vegetation.

As this is a fully exportable trophy Hippo hunt, a CITES permit will be required prior to export. Nelson and his team will arrange all necessary permit applications and documentation before commencement of the safari.

    Traveling to the Caprivi Strip

    Hippo trophy
    Hippo trophy

This Namibian hunting safari begins with an international flight into Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDH) in Windhoek, Namibia’s capital city. From Windhoek, hunters will continue onward on a domestic or regional flight to Katima Mulilo Airport, situated within the famous Caprivi Strip (Zambezi Region). Regional flights generally operate several times weekly, typically on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays.

For international hunters, spending a night or two in Windhoek either before or after the safari is highly recommended. The Hilton Hotel is rifle-friendly and conveniently located, while excellent restaurants such as Joe’s Beerhouse and The Butcher Block offer outstanding cuisine and the perfect opportunity to relax and sample a few local Namibian beers before heading north to the hunting grounds.

Windhoek itself is easy to navigate, safe, and affordable for travelers, with transportation services readily available throughout the city. Many visiting hunters make use of the Yango App, Namibia’s equivalent of Uber, for airport transfers and local transportation.

For those with additional time available, traveling overland to the Caprivi by rental vehicle is also a worthwhile option. Although the drive is considerably longer, it allows hunters to experience Namibia’s ever-changing scenery firsthand, from open desert landscapes and rugged mountains to river systems and lush northern bushveld regions. The journey itself becomes part of the overall safari adventure.

Having personally hunted both Hippo and Cape Buffalo within the Caprivi Strip, we at Game Hunting Safaris consider this region one of Africa’s truly special dangerous game hunting destinations. The combination of exceptional hunting, warm hospitality, outstanding cuisine, diverse wildlife, and the sheer beauty of the Caprivi makes the long journey to northern Namibia more than worthwhile.

    • Dip and Pack of Hippo Trophy

    A Luxurious Hunting Lodge

On arrival at the hunting lodge, hunters will be welcomed by the professional hunting team including trackers, skinners, camp staff, and your PH before beginning an exciting seven-day pursuit of trophy Hippo within the remote waterways of the Caprivi Strip.

The hunting lodge offers a comfortable and authentic African safari atmosphere, combining rustic bushveld charm with modern amenities designed to make your stay both relaxing and enjoyable. Spacious en-suite chalets provide comfortable accommodation after long days in the field, while hearty meals, cold drinks, and evenings spent under the African sky complete the traditional dangerous game safari experience.

After each day’s hunt, hunters can relax around camp listening to the sounds of the surrounding wilderness while reflecting on the challenges and excitement of hunting Hippo in one of Namibia’s most beautiful and wildlife-rich regions.

The Dangers  Hunting Hippo in Namibia

At first glance, Hippo may appear calm and sluggish while resting in the waterways of the Caprivi Strip, but they are widely regarded as one of Africa’s most dangerous and aggressive animals. Responsible for hundreds of human fatalities annually across Africa, Hippo can become extremely territorial and unpredictable, particularly when surprised or when protecting calves near the water’s edge.

Within the reed-lined river systems and marshes of the Caprivi, hunters will rely heavily on experienced trackers to identify fresh spoor, feeding areas, and the well-worn “Hippo highways” leading between the water and grazing areas. Hunting conditions are often challenging, with thick vegetation, muddy embankments, deep water channels, and limited visibility all adding to the intensity of the safari.

Understanding proper Hippo Shot Placement is absolutely critical before attempting a Hippo hunt. Hippo possess extremely thick skull bones and dense muscle structure, requiring precise bullet placement into either the brain or vital organs for a quick and ethical harvest. A poorly placed shot may result in the Hippo disappearing into deep water, making recovery exceptionally difficult and, in some situations, nearly impossible.

    Handy Tips when Hippo Hunting

    • Understand and research the challenges of hunting Hippo
    • Hippos have a thick hide and dense bones, use a minimum caliber of a .375 loaded with quality ammunition.
    • For a brain shot, use solid tips of at least 300 grains.
    • As Hippos spend many hours in the water, getting a clear shot is a challenge. Practice patience.
    • Be aware of local regulations and laws, you will be hunting with a representation of the Namibian government.
    • Study Hippo shot placement, front brain, side head brain shot and bullet placement into vitals should the Hippo be on land.
    • Use a rifle that you are comfortable with and that you can shoot accurately.
    • Always prioritize safety.
    • Do not overpack, daily laundry services are provided.

    Tourist activities in Namibia

Namibia is not only an exceptional dangerous game hunting destination, but also one of Africa’s leading tourism and adventure travel destinations, making it well worthwhile extending your stay before or after the safari. From the wildlife-rich plains of Etosha National Park and the towering dunes of the Namib Desert and Sossusvlei, to the rugged Skeleton Coast, Damaraland, Fish River Canyon, and the granite peaks of Spitzkoppe, Namibia offers an incredible variety of landscapes and experiences for visiting hunters and observers alike.

Travelers can also enjoy time exploring the vibrant towns of Windhoek and Swakopmund, while additional activities include 4x4 desert excursions, dune bashing, whale watching, camel riding, catamaran cruises, hot springs, and photographic safaris throughout the country.

Following a recent Elephant hunt in Namibia, we at Game Hunting Safaris personally traveled by vehicle from Windhoek through Hentiesbaai, Swakopmund, and Walvis Bay, and the experience was exceptional. The scenery, hospitality, cuisine, accommodations, and overall travel experience further reinforced why Namibia remains one of our favorite safari destinations in Africa.

The Hippo Hunt, more than Just a Trophy

It is about the people you meet, the places you experience, the challenges faced in the wild, and the memories created along the way. Hunting Hippo in Namibia’s Caprivi Strip places hunters deep within one of southern Africa’s last truly untamed wilderness regions, where every day on safari brings new experiences and unpredictable encounters.

The combination of wild landscapes, traditional fair chase hunting, and the raw excitement of pursuing one of Africa’s most dangerous animals creates an unforgettable African safari experience.
