Elephant Hunting in Namibia: Trophy Import/Export Regulations

Under CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species), trophy Elephant hunted in Bushmanland and Caprivi Strip (Zambezi Region) in Namibia are exportable.

The US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) regulates the import of Elephant trophies and applications are made on a “case by case” basis. Hunters will also need a ESA (Endangered Species Act). Namibia has legislation in place to effectively implement the basic requirements of CITES.

The USFWS amended their rule to address concerns about the international trade of Elephants and increase transparency of their permit decision making, while aligning U.S. requirements with assistance and guidance from CITES. Companies such as Conservation force can assist with individual applications.

The Elephant Hunting Concession

This “no-fence” free range concession in Namibia has bountiful game and is nestled between the Chobe and Zambezi River, on the border of Namibia and Botswana. Pieter has a 100% success rate in this area.

There are plenty of Elephant that migrate from the Chobe Reserve in Botswana and cross into Namibia. Botswana has the highest population of Elephant in all of Africa, with numbers exceeding 130 000.

The Caprivi region offers a hunt of lifetime and is filled with not only Elephant, but Cape Buffalo where populations are estimated at more than 4500. This concession is also famous for producing trophy Hippo and Giant Crocodile. The waterways also provide an opportunity for you to fish for Tigerfish which can grow up to twenty pounds in the Chobe River. The Caprivi is an adventurous landscape that is not always easy to navigate, but those who care to take up this challenge will be well rewarded with an exceptional trophy.

ELEPHANT

We can personally vouch for this safari and rate it a full ten stars!!

The Elephant Hunting Grounds

The Kabulabula Conservancy is characterized by the floodplains of the Chobe and Zambezi rivers and is a landscape unlike anywhere else in Namibia. This narrow strip runs for more than 250 miles in length. Habitat consists of a combination of open grasslands, lush woodland forests, wetlands, rivers, and deltas.

The Caprivi Strip piece of land that “juts out” in the Northeast corner of Namibia and is surrounded by Angola, Botswana, and Zambia. When traversing through the area, it is surreal to have a different country on each side of the waterways. The Caprivi is incredibly unique in many ways which adds excitement to the hunt.

The Kabulabua conservancy is across the Chobe River bordering the Chobe National Reserve. Elephant, big game, and plains game are plentiful.

This concession is one of a few pristine marvels in Southern Africa.

Best time for an Elephant Hunt in the Caprivi

The Caprivi, being characterized by floodplains is materially affected by the rainy season literally “filling up” like a bathtub during the rainy season. The area supports an array of African wildlife and aquatic creatures. The dry winter months are the preferred when Elephant hunting which run from May to September.

Temperatures are more pleasant, with lower levels of humidity and a reduced risk of dehydration.

The Free-Range Caprivi Elephant Hunt

On this Elephant hunt, there will be plenty of trophy Elephant to choose. Stalking up close and going unnoticed to position yourself into shooting range, well that is a different discussion.

This is an “Old Africa” Free range, fair chase Elephant hunt.

Hunting methods will vary depending on the level of the floodplains and options will be:

  • Walking embankments and spotting
  • Traversing via Makoro (wooden canoe)
  • Making use of a vehicle to cover larger areas.

ELEPHANT IN THE CAPRIVI

As the Caprivi is flat, walking a few miles a day is not classified as “extreme hunting” and in fact very pleasant. However, be aware as the reed beds are filled with monster crocodile.  Dangerous game hunts are filled with action and surprises, and we had more a few on our safari!! Being on “high alert” always is crucial to survival in the Caprivi.

Once fresh sign has been spotted, or a glimpse spotted a suitable Bull, the walk and stalk will begin. Having an in-depth knowledge of Elephant shot placement  is critical. The angle of the point of entry of the bullet into the brain changes continually relative to the distance between the hunter and the Elephant.

At all times be sure to listen to the professional hunter. In recent times there have been a few cases where people have been killed by while Elephant hunting, these animals are dangerous.

The Hunting Adventure: Community Benefits

This Elephant hunt focuses on the challenges and achievement of tracking, hunting and the thrill of the pursuit.  The memories and stories you take home following this hunt will be beyond compare.

Importantly, this Elephant hunt contributes to wildlife conservation and community upliftment projects: The outfitter is committed to building roads, rehabilitating waterholes, installing solar panels, water pumps while continually uplifting and improving the quality of life in the local communities.

The meat from this Elephant hunt will be distributed to communities.  As a direct result of contributions made by big game hunters, outfitters are able to employ and train local community members as trackers, skinners, chefs and camp attendants.

Communities have a vested interest in ensuring the preservation of Elephants and other game populations and their habitats.

It is most rewarding to take a day trip to one of the local villages and see the extent of how the residents benefit as a direct result of your Elephant hunt. The experience is humbling!
