Important Trophy Export Information for U.S. Hunters

Under CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species), trophy Elephants hunted in Bushmanland and Caprivi Strip (Zambezi Region) in Namibia are exportable

The US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) regulates the import of Elephant trophies and applications are made on a “case by case” basis. Hunters will also need an ESA (Endangered Species Act). Namibia has legislation in place to effectively implement the basic requirements of CITES.

The USFWS amended its rule to address concerns about the international trade of Elephants and increase the transparency of their permit decision making, while aligning U.S. requirements with assistance and guidance from CITES. Companies such as Conservation Force can assist with individual applications.

    Free-Range Elephant Hunting in Namibia

Remote, wild, and largely untouched, Bushmanland remains one of the last truly authentic free-range Elephant hunting areas in Southern Africa. Situated in northeastern Namibia, this vast wilderness is renowned for producing quality trophy bulls while offering hunters an unforgettable dangerous game safari experience in true African wilderness conditions.

Namibia is one of the least densely populated countries in the world, allowing wildlife to roam across enormous unfenced conservancies and natural migration corridors. Since 2010, Pieter and his team have operated within these community conservancies, conducting professionally managed safaris in some of the country’s most respected Elephant hunting areas.

The Bushmanland region consists primarily of two expansive conservancies:

The JAQNA Conservancy is home to approximately 3,700 San Bushmen and covers more than 3,500 square miles of Kalahari sandveld and Acacia woodland. In addition to trophy Elephant, hunters may encounter Leopard, Eland, Gemsbok, Kudu, Warthog, Steenbok, and Duiker, while endangered African wild dogs are also occasionally seen in the area.

The ONDJOU Conservancy, also known as Hereroland, spans over 3,300 square miles of grassland, pans, and Kalahari habitat that support Elephant and other dangerous game species throughout the year. This conservancy also holds healthy populations of plains game including Gemsbok, Kudu, Warthog, Ostrich, and Jackal.

For hunters seeking an authentic wilderness safari, few experiences compare to tracking mature bulls through these remote conservancies with experienced professional hunters and local trackers. This safari offers a genuine free-range dangerous game hunting experience in one of Namibia’s most respected Elephant hunting regions.

     SHOT ELEPHANT

The Challenge of Hunting Free-Range Elephant

Pursuing a mature free-range Elephant remains one of Africa’s greatest dangerous game hunting experiences. Tracking bulls through remote wilderness conservancies requires patience, discipline, and the ability to perform under pressure when opportunities present themselves at close range.

With decades of dangerous game experience, Pieter and his team of professional hunters and trackers provide the knowledge, fieldcraft, and local expertise required to conduct safe, ethical, and professionally managed Elephant safaris in Namibia’s remote hunting areas.

Accurate shot placement is critical when hunting thick-skinned dangerous game, particularly when hunting Elephant in dense cover or challenging conditions. Hunters preparing for their safari are encouraged to review our professional guide to shot placement on an Elephant before arriving in camp.

    Traveling to Bushmanland

Stress-free travel: Fly into Hosea Kutako International Airport in Windhoek, Namibia, where the outfitter will meet you and transport you to the concession. The drive from the airport to Bushmanland is 5 hours. Charter flights can be arranged on request.

Known for its vast, unspoiled landscapes, Bushmanland offers an authentic and rugged hunting experience. This remote region, rich in wildlife and cultural heritage, is ideal for a true wilderness adventure. Enjoy the breathtaking beauty of Bushmanland’s diverse ecosystems, from open savannas to dense woodlands. Every moment in this pristine environment adds to the overall hunting experience.

    Health and Vaccines

Before embarking on your dream Namibia hunting safari, check with your booking agent as to recommended vaccines and precautions before travel.

The below considerations are highly recommended:
    • Malaria: Most of Namibia is malaria but regions such as the Zambezi Delta ( Caprivi Strip) could be malaria hot spots. Liaise with the African outfitter and then consult with your medical practitioner to obtain a recommended prescription.
    • Typhoid: This is recommended for most travelers when crossing most African borders.
    • Yellow Fever: This may be a requirement when traveling to and from countries with a risk of Yellow Fever
    • Rabies: Never pet strange dogs or animals while on your hunting safari.
    • Hepatitis A & B: These vaccines are recommended for members of the hunting safari who are not vaccinated.

    Hunting Lodge & Services

After a day in the bush, hunters can relax in comfortable tented safari camps designed to combine authentic wilderness atmosphere with modern convenience. Both conservancy camps are fully equipped and offer spacious en-suite tents, hot showers, generated electricity, daily laundry service, and traditional campfire gathering areas beneath the African night sky.

Guests can expect hearty home-cooked meals, welcoming hospitality, and attentive service from experienced camp staff who work hard to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable safari experience from arrival through departure. The camps provide the ideal balance between rugged African adventure and the comfort expected on a professionally managed dangerous game safari.

How your Elephant Hunt contributes to Conservation

Conservation Focus: Pieter and his team of professional hunters efforts include building roads, rehabilitating waterholes building dams for wildlife, and installing solar panels and water pumps.

Encouraging clients to donate to ‘Wildlife Africa Conservation Foundation (WACF). Providing and distributing meat and water to local communities.  Building facilities (like schools) identified by the conservancy community.  Employ and train local community members as trackers, skinners, chefs and camp attendants. This outfitter is committed to ethical hunting practices and sustainability. A portion of the proceeds from your hunt supports local conservation efforts and community development projects.

Regulated Practices: Pieter and the team adhere to all local and international hunting regulations, ensuring the preservation of wildlife populations and their habitats.

    Tips when Elephant Hunting

    • Prioritize safety and listen to your professional hunter.
    • Be patient and only shoot when you are 100% sure of a clean kill
    • Be ready for backup shots in quick succession
    • Hunting Elephants may require walking many miles, ensure that you are in decent physical shape.

    • Elephants do not always present perfect brain shots, nor broadside, be aware of the point of aim if the Elephant is quartering towards or away from you.
    • Be patient and have a “great time,” it is a privilege to hunt these incredible animals.

    Tailored Safari Experience

Each Elephant safari can be customized to suit the hunter’s individual preferences, including additional hunting days, observer accommodations, and the opportunity to add other dangerous game or plains game species to the safari package. Whether planning a dedicated Elephant hunt or a broader African hunting adventure, the safari can be tailored to match your goals and expectations.

Following the hunt, the professional team will assist with the field preparation, documentation, and handling of trophies for export and Dip & Pack services, ensuring the process is managed efficiently and professionally.
