Elephant Hunting in Namibia: Trophy Import/Export Regulations

Under CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species), trophy Elephants hunted in Bushmanland and Caprivi Strip (Zambezi Region) in Namibia are exportable

The US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) regulates the import of Elephant trophies and applications are made on a “case by case” basis. Hunters will also need an ESA (Endangered Species Act). Namibia has legislation in place to effectively implement the basic requirements of CITES.

The USFWS amended its rule to address concerns about the international trade of Elephants and increase the transparency of their permit decision making, while aligning U.S. requirements with assistance and guidance from CITES. Companies such as Conservation Force can assist with individual applications.

Namibia is one of the least densely populated places worldwide making it a safe and exciting country to visit. It is a true wilderness and home to the world's largest population of free-roaming animals.  Since 2010, Pieter has operated on free-range concessions in Namibia, known as conservancies.

Bushmanland is famous for its trophy Elephant, and abundance of Leopards and consists of two conservancies.

The JAQNA conservancy is inhabited by the 3,700 nomadic San (Bushman) tribe and consists of 3,522 square miles of Kalahari sand flat landscape intertwined with Acacia Woodland. Quota; Trophy Elephant, Leopard, Eland, Gemsbuck,  Steenbock, Kudu, Warthog, and Duiker. A pack of endangered wild dogs also roams in the conservancy.

The ONDJOU Conservancy, also known as Hereroland (named after the +-2000 Herero people) consists of 3,370 square miles. The vegetation is Kalahari sand, Grassland, and a series of pans providing much-needed water for elephants and other wildlife. Quota; trophy Elephant and Leopard, and a few African plains game animals such as Gemsbuck, Kudu, Jackal, Ostrich, and Warthog.

Health and Vaccines Pre-Hunting Safari

Before embarking on your dream Namibia hunting safari, check with your booking agent as to recommended vaccines and precautions before travel.

The below considerations are highly recommended:
  • Malaria: Most of Namibia is malaria but regions such as the Zambezi Delta ( Caprivi Strip) could be malaria hot spots. Liaise with the African outfitter and then consult with your medical practitioner to obtain a recommended prescription.
  • Typhoid: This is recommended for most travelers when crossing most African borders.
  • Yellow Fever: This may be a requirement when traveling to and from countries with a risk of Yellow Fever
  • Rabies: Never pet strange dogs or animals while on your hunting safari.
  • Hepatitis A & B: These vaccines are recommended for members of the hunting safari who are not vaccinated.

Encouraging clients to donate to ‘Wildlife Africa Conservation Foundation (WACF). Providing and distributing meat and water to local communities.  Building facilities (like schools) identified by the conservancy community.  Employ and train local community members as trackers, skinners, chefs and camp attendants.
