This dangerous game hunt will take place on an exclusive hunting concession which is situated in the Tete-Sofala Province of Mozambique, and is one of the greatest Crocodile and Hippo hunting grounds in all of Africa, home to feared predators. Although this safari is focused on both crocodile and hippo, the Lake Cahora Bassa area is especially well suited to hippo hunting in Mozambique, with deep water, quiet bays, and productive shoreline habitat giving hunters a focused aquatic dangerous game experience.
The shoreline of Lake Cahora Bassa is broken and uneven, with quiet bays, estuaries, waterways, and long stretches of wild bank backed by baobab trees and mopane woodland. This is proper wild Africa, and the lake has earned its reputation for big Nile crocodiles.
The Game Hunting Safaris team has hunted crocodile on Lake Cahora Bassa and can recommend this safari from first-hand experience. On our hunt, two exceptional crocodiles were taken, measuring 14.9 feet and 15.1 feet. With more than 45 miles of untamed shoreline, this concession is exactly the kind of place that makes hunting crocodile in Mozambique worth travelling for.
You will travel into Tete International Airport from Johannesburg South Africa. Daily flights are available on Airlink, Monday to Friday and it is a short flight, roughly two hours in duration. When arriving in Tete, your professional hunter will transfer you to the hunting grounds. If you only clear customs after 14h00, you will stay overnight in Tete. The drive from the airport to Lake Cahora Bassa, while only approximately 140 miles takes approximately 5 hours due to the poor state of the national roads. Along the way, you will pass many African markets selling all types of food and vegetables, ask your PH to stop and purchase some freshly baked bread, it is worth the trouble.
Both hippo and Nile crocodile hunting require calm, precise shooting. This is not usually a physically demanding hunt, but it does require confidence with your rifle and the ability to place a bullet exactly where it needs to go.
This safari also fits naturally into our dangerous game hunts category, where accurate shooting and calm decision-making matter more than hard walking.
Hunters should study crocodile shot placement before arriving in camp, as anchoring the animal immediately is critical when hunting near deep water. A well-placed shot into the spine, followed by a brain shot if needed, is critical.
Hippo are often hunted while in the water, where only the head may be visible. In that situation, Hippo shot placement is very specific, usually between the eyes from the front, or between the eye and ear from the side. As with crocodile, a poor shot can result in the trophy disappearing into deep water.
Lake Cahora Bassa is widely regarded as one of Africa’s premier aquatic dangerous game areas, known for producing exceptional Nile crocodiles, with specimens over 16 feet taken from these waters. The combination of vast shoreline, remote habitat, and healthy crocodile populations makes this concession a serious destination for crocodile hunters.
