Combining Hippo Hunts with Cape Buffalo Hunts creates one of the most rewarding dangerous game safaris available in Africa. Conducted in the heart of Limpopo Province, this safari offers hunters the opportunity to pursue two iconic members of Africa's Dangerous 7 while enjoying professional guidance, quality accommodation, and excellent trophy potential.

Designed for American and international hunters seeking a traditional African hunting experience, this safari combines the challenge of tracking mature buffalo bulls on foot with the patience and precision required when hunting hippo along rivers and permanent water systems. The result is a well-balanced dangerous game adventure that showcases two very different styles of African hunting.

Taking place on a large private concession in Limpopo, this safari provides hunters with an authentic Hunting in South Africa experience while pursuing two of Africa's most respected dangerous game species. The hunt can also be customized with additional species, allowing hunters to make the most of their time in one of Africa's premier safari destinations.

    • 1 × Hippo

This dangerous game safari combines two of Africa's most respected species, offering hunters the opportunity to experience both traditional buffalo tracking and classic hippo hunting during a single Limpopo safari.

    The Animal Most Hunters Underestimate

Hunters researching Cape Buffalo Hunting in South Africa often focus almost entirely on buffalo. Yet on this safari, it is frequently the hippo that becomes the most surprising and memorable part of the experience.

Although they spend much of their lives in water, hippo are highly territorial, exceptionally powerful, and capable of moving with surprising speed when threatened. Responsible hippo hunting demands patience, careful observation, and a thorough understanding of animal behaviour.

Unlike buffalo hunting, where the challenge frequently revolves around tracking fresh spoor and closing the distance on foot, hippo hunting is often a game of timing and precision. Hours may be spent studying animals in rivers and dams before a suitable trophy presents the right opportunity for a safe and ethical shot.

The contrast between these two species is part of what makes this safari so rewarding. One hunt is built around tracking and stalking through bushveld, while the other focuses on observation, patience, and shot placement around water. Together, they create a dangerous game experience that showcases two very different sides of African hunting.

More Than Just Buffalo and Hippo

While Cape buffalo and hippo form the foundation of this safari, the concession supports an impressive variety of additional African game species, allowing hunters to build a far more diverse trophy collection during their time in Limpopo.

Depending on availability and hunting objectives, species may include kudu, nyala, impala, zebra, blue wildebeest, waterbuck, warthog, and numerous other plains game animals for which South Africa has become famous. Many hunters choose to add one or more species to their safari, making the most of their time in Africa while experiencing the remarkable diversity of wildlife found within the region.

The combination of dangerous game and quality plains game opportunities is one of the reasons Limpopo remains such a popular destination among international hunters. Few areas offer the chance to pursue a Cape buffalo in the morning and spend the following day stalking kudu, nyala, or zebra through classic African bushveld.

Hunters interested in expanding their safari can explore additional opportunities through our Plains Game Hunts collection, which showcases some of Africa's most sought-after species and destinations.

Why Limpopo Has Become South Africa's Buffalo Capital

Limpopo has earned a reputation as one of Africa's premier destinations for Cape buffalo hunting. A combination of suitable habitat, professional wildlife management, and extensive hunting properties has helped establish the province as the centre of South Africa's buffalo industry.

The region's mix of bushveld, river systems, floodplains, and open savanna creates ideal conditions for buffalo. Large breeding populations and careful trophy management allow hunters access to mature bulls while maintaining healthy herds for future generations.

For visiting hunters, Limpopo also offers excellent infrastructure, comfortable accommodations, and easy access through Johannesburg, making it one of the most practical destinations for a dangerous game safari. These factors have helped make the province a popular choice.

    Hunting in the Waterberg Mountains

This safari takes place within South Africa's renowned Waterberg region, one of Limpopo's most respected hunting areas. Characterized by rolling bushveld, seasonal river systems, rocky ridges, and extensive wildlife habitat, the region provides an ideal setting for dangerous game hunting.

The 12,000-acre concession supports healthy populations of Cape buffalo and hippo, while also offering a variety of additional plains game species. The combination of thick cover, natural water sources, and diverse terrain creates excellent conditions for traditional spot-and-stalk hunting.

For international hunters, the destination is also remarkably accessible. Hunters arrive through OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg before enjoying a comfortable road transfer of approximately two and a half hours to the hunting area.

Despite its accessibility, the concession delivers a genuine African hunting experience. Early mornings begin in the bushveld, days are spent pursuing game on foot, and evenings are enjoyed around the lodge while reliving the events of the day's hunt.

The result is a safari that combines convenience, comfort, and authentic dangerous game hunting in one of South Africa's most established hunting regions.

Is This the Right Dangerous Game Safari for You?

This safari is designed for hunters who want more than a standard plains game experience. Combining Cape buffalo and hippo creates a hunt that demands patience, concentration, and a willingness to adapt to two very different dangerous game hunting styles.

Buffalo hunting often involves long hours following fresh spoor through thick bushveld before an opportunity presents itself. Hippo hunting requires a different mindset, built around observation, careful trophy selection, and precise shot placement around rivers and water systems.

This hunt is particularly well suited to hunters looking to take the next step into Africa's Dangerous Game Hunts while enjoying the comfort, accessibility, and professional infrastructure for which South Africa has become known.

Whether this is your first dangerous game safari or another chapter in a long African hunting journey, the combination of buffalo, hippo, and additional species opportunities creates a rewarding and well-rounded hunting experience.

A Classic African Dangerous Game Adventure

Cape buffalo and hippo represent two very different hunting challenges, yet together they create a safari that captures much of what makes Africa so special. From tracking mature buffalo bulls through the bushveld to patiently observing hippo along rivers and water systems, every day presents new opportunities and experiences.

Combined with the diverse wildlife, professional guiding, and renowned hunting areas of Limpopo's Waterberg region, this safari offers hunters the chance to pursue two of Africa's most respected dangerous game species during a single trip.

For hunters planning future African Hunting Trips, this safari provides an outstanding introduction to dangerous game hunting while delivering the quality, challenge, and authenticity that continue to draw sportsmen back to Africa year after year.
