    Cape Buffalo Hunting in Zimbabwe

Cape buffalo remain one of Africa’s most respected dangerous game animals, known for their resilience, unpredictability, and ability to absorb punishment. For hunters interested in buffalo hunting in Zimbabwe, areas such as Gwayi ECA and Sikumi East offer classic free-range conditions where buffalo are tracked on foot through teak woodland, river systems, and thick bushveld habitat.

Unlike many dangerous game hunts that rely on a single opportunity, buffalo hunting is often a process of tracking, evaluating herds, locating mature bulls, and making good decisions under changing conditions. Success depends as much on patience, fieldcraft, and teamwork as it does on marksmanship, which is why Cape buffalo continue to rank among Africa’s most sought-after dangerous game species.

    Additional Hunting Opportunities

Hunters looking to extend their safari can take advantage of the excellent variety of plains game hunts available throughout the Gwayi ECA and Sikumi East concessions. From kudu hunting in Zimbabwe in the region's teak forests and broken bushveld to zebra, waterbuck, impala, and wildebeest, the area offers the opportunity to build a well-rounded African safari around a Cape buffalo hunt.

Additional species may be added subject to available hunting days and quota allocations. Many hunters choose to combine their buffalo safari with selected plains game hunts, creating a more diverse hunting experience while exploring different habitats across the concession.

Traveling for the Hunt in Zimbabwe

International hunters will generally arrive via Victoria Falls International Airport (VFA), one of Zimbabwe’s primary safari gateways. The airport is well connected to Johannesburg through regional carriers such as Airlink, CemAir, FlySafair, and South African Airways, with a flight time of approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes.

Upon arrival, hunters will be met by Tiaan and his team before transferring to the hunting area. The drive takes approximately 2½ hours, gradually leaving the tourism hub of Victoria Falls behind and entering the remote teak forests, river systems, and bushveld habitat that characterize this part of north-western Zimbabwe.

For hunters researching buffalo hunting in Zimbabwe, the journey itself offers an introduction to the landscapes and wildlife that make the region one of the country’s most respected free-range dangerous game destinations.

    The Free-Range Hunting Concessions

This safari takes place across two of Zimbabwe’s most respected hunting areas, providing access to more than 100,000 acres of free-range dangerous game habitat bordering the greater Hwange ecosystem.

    Gwayi ECA

Gwayi ECA lies adjacent to Hwange National Park and remains unfenced, allowing wildlife to move naturally between the park and surrounding hunting areas. The landscape consists of river systems, open plains, mopane woodland, thick bushveld, and scattered valleys that create ideal habitat for Cape buffalo and a wide variety of dangerous game species.

Covering approximately 741,000 hectares, Gwayi supports healthy populations of buffalo, elephant, sable, hippo, crocodile, and plains game. The area is also well known for lion hunting in Zimbabwe, with mature males moving freely throughout the greater Hwange ecosystem.

    Sikumi East

Situated along the eastern boundary of Hwange National Park, Sikumi East forms part of the larger Ngamo-Sikumi Forest block. Covering approximately 420,000 acres, the concession is dominated by dense teak forests, sandy tracks, and thick cover that create excellent habitat for both predators and dangerous game.

Sikumi East has developed a strong reputation for leopard hunting in Zimbabwe, where experienced trackers, well-established predator populations, and vast areas of low-pressure habitat combine to create excellent hunting opportunities. The concession also supports elephant, Cape buffalo, sable, and a variety of plains game species, making it one of the more diverse hunting areas in north-western Zimbabwe.

    The Hunting Lodge

Hunters are accommodated in a comfortable safari lodge offering en-suite facilities, hot showers, daily housekeeping, and all the amenities needed after a long day in the field. Spacious communal areas provide the perfect setting to relax, share stories from the day's hunt, and prepare for the following morning's tracking.

Meals are prepared by a resident chef, with menus often featuring locally sourced ingredients and game meat harvested during the safari. From traditional campfire dinners to hearty breakfasts before heading into the bush, dining remains an important part of the overall hunting experience.

The lodge is also well suited to accompanying family members and non-hunting guests, with comfortable surroundings and opportunities to enjoy the wildlife, scenery, and relaxed pace of the African bush.

Best Time for Buffalo Hunting in Zimbabwe

Buffalo hunting in Zimbabwe can be conducted throughout much of the year, although the cooler and drier months between April and October are generally considered the preferred hunting season. During this period, vegetation becomes less dense, temperatures are more comfortable, and tracking conditions often improve.

As the dry season progresses, buffalo and other wildlife become increasingly dependent on permanent water sources, creating more predictable movement patterns throughout the hunting areas. While successful hunts are possible across a range of conditions, many hunters prefer the winter months for the combination of comfortable weather and excellent tracking opportunities.

    Tips for Cape Buffalo Hunting

Cape buffalo have earned their reputation as one of Africa’s most respected dangerous game animals for good reason. Old bulls are exceptionally tough, highly alert, and often inhabit thick cover where encounters can develop quickly and at close range. Hunting buffalo successfully requires patience, discipline, and the ability to remain calm when conditions change unexpectedly.

The Gwayi and Sikumi hunting areas are particularly well suited to hunters who enjoy traditional walk-and-stalk safaris and close-range dangerous game hunting. Thick teak forests, dense bushveld, and winding river systems often mean shots are taken at relatively short distances, creating the type of hunting experience many enthusiasts of the .416 Rigby, .458 Lott, and classic double rifles such as the .470 and .500 Nitro Express travel to Africa to pursue.

Accurate shot placement remains one of the most important factors in any successful buffalo hunt, particularly when following mature bulls through thick cover. Hunters preparing for the safari are encouraged to review our Cape Buffalo Shot Placement Guide before arriving in camp.
