Why go hunting in South Africa?
Sable hunts are challenging affairs, as these wary antelopes are always on alert, with dominant males and other herd members issuing alarm calls when spotting threats. This makes it extremely difficult for a hunter to approach them undetected, and this, combined with their fast reflexes, makes them a challenge to stalk and hunt.
They are best targeted through spot-and-stalk or tracking, while ambush techniques near a water hole have also been successful.
Best Season for Buffalo Hunting in South Africa
While hunting is available throughout the year in South Africa, the peak season for enjoying Cape buffalo hunting – and, in fact, any hunting in the region – is during the cooler, drier months (May to September). During these cooler months, there are fewer bugs and critters out, and the vegetation and grasses are shorter, allowing the hunter to spot and stalk his prey more easily. Animals are more likely to gather in or around water holes, increasing the opportunities for hunters to complete a successful hunt.
