Africa is a continent that is rich in wildlife, with many species available for game hunting safaris. These are generally categorized as follows:

Dangerous Game – African elephant, Cape buffalo, lion, leopard, rhinoceros, hippo, and Nile crocodile.

African Cats – Lion, leopard, cheetah, caracal, serval, civet, and African genet.

Specialty Animals – Baboon, giraffe, zebra, ostrich, porcupine, black-backed jackal, brown hyena, striped hyena, spotted hyena, bushpig, red river hog, vervet monkey, aardwolf, bat-eared fox, warthog, yellow mongoose, banded mongoose, water mongoose, slender mongoose, white-tailed mongoose, common dwarf mongoose, rock hyrax, Gaboon viper, African rock python, Barbary sheep (aoudad), Cape fox, and honey badger.

African Plains Game – Warthog, kudu, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, and gemsbok.

Exotic Plains Game – Sable, bongo, sitatunga, scimitar-horned oryx, roan, tsessebe, Cookson’s wildebeest, King’s wildebeest, black lechwe, and Kafue lechwe.

Large Antelope – Kudu, sable, bongo, waterbuck, scimitar-horned oryx, eland, Lord Derby’s eland, lesser kudu, and roan.

Medium Antelope – Springbok, impala, wildebeest, sitatunga, nyala, tsessebe, blesbok, bontebok, bushbuck, fallow deer, red hartebeest, reedbuck, Grant’s gazelle, Thomson’s gazelle, gerenuk, Coke’s hartebeest, Lichtenstein wildebeest, Nile lechwe, red lechwe, and gemsbok.

Small Antelope – Klipspringer, Damara dik-dik, common duiker, oribi, grysbok, steenbok, Guenter’s dik-dik, Sharpe’s grysbok, gray duiker, red duiker, yellow-backed duiker, royal antelope, and suni.

The Dangerous 7 includes the Big 5 (African elephant, rhinoceros, lion, leopard, and Cape buffalo), as well as the Nile crocodile and hippopotamus.

The title for Africa’s most dangerous animal belongs to the Cape buffalo. Aggressive, unpredictable, and known to hold a grudge, it has caused the death of many humans.

Four of the Big 5 game animals can be hunted in South Africa: lion, Cape buffalo, elephant, and rhino. The leopard is currently not available to hunt.

The Big 5 are a group of notoriously difficult and dangerous animals to hunt. They include the African elephant, rhinoceros, leopard, Cape buffalo, and lion.

Each animal is known for its aggression and the unique challenges it presents to hunters.

Rhinos can only be hunted in Namibia and South Africa under stringent guidelines and conditions.

Cheetah hunting is very strictly regulated. Currently, Namibia is the only country where cheetahs can be hunted, and this is closely monitored by Namibia’s Ministry of Environment and Tourism.

The Tiny 10 is a group of small antelope hunted in Southern Africa. These include the Damara dik-dik, blue duiker, gray duiker, red duiker, suni, Cape grysbok, klipspringer, steenbok, Sharpe’s grysbok, and oribi.

The Damara dik-dik can be hunted in Namibia, and the suni in Mozambique. The remaining Tiny Ten species can be hunted across Southern Africa.
